SSL MacGuffin - S3 - TubaDeus - 2026-06-24 For those who missed the premise of this series, you can find the full background here. The short version is that the winner of the first ever SSL game is awarded the initial MacGuffin trophy, which is then passed on whenever the current title holder loses in competition play (Friendlies don't count). I will track how many games each team starts with the MacGuffin in order to determine the true best team in SSL history (because everyone knows the MacGuffin points are the true measure of greatness). You can see previous entries in this series here: S1-2 With the introductions out of the way, let's first see where we left off last time! All Time Standings: 1) Inter London - 6T-2) Cairo City - 5T-2) Athenai F.C. - 5T-2) Montreal United - 55) Hollywood FC - 46) FC Rio - 37) Tokyo S.C. - 28) CF Catalunya - 0It's still very early in the SSL's history, so no one has really had the chance to pull away. Even if they did, the league had a ton of parity early on. The rankings are still very tight. What's more, we've got two more teams entering the ring in S3; CA Buenos Aires and Sydney City. We also have FC Rio officially rebranding to Seoul MFC. How will the new contenders fare? Will the rebrand aid the slightly lagging Seoul squad? Will anyone pull away in S3? Let's find out! To be fair, the league is growing quickly and there are already significantly more games played in S3 than there were in S1. I don't think that diminishes the fact that Sydney City waltzed in and went on a better single streak than any other team had accomplished total in the previous two seasons combined! That massive streak also cut down slightly on the league parity this season; one less team held the MacGuffin in S3 than S2 despite there being two more teams. They have to share it with Hollywood, though, whose own strong S3 performance allowed them to leapfrog a few other teams to the top. Perhaps not so coincidentally, those were the exact same two teams that played for the S3 Cup. Of course, for those two to launch up, someone else has to fall down. Montreal's weak performance dropped them three spots in the rankings, and Inter London's doughnut dropped them four. Buenos Aires failed to secure any MacGuffin wins in their inaugural season. Hopefully they find their way onto the board soon. |
