Jesper Sjöman's SSL career (so far) - Ashes - 2026-07-07 A quick look over Jesper Sjöman’s career reveals some major ups and downs within his first few years in the SSL. Final day title races, relegation heartbreak, international football, a deep Cup run, the 24 year old Gotlander has seen a lot already, and who knows what more awaits him? S20 - Academy His first steps in the SSL would take him just a three hour ferry and one hour train ride from home, as a 17-year old Jesper spent his first season in the system at Stockholms IK. The index seems to be missing data from S20, so I had to actually manually go through the videos on YouTube to find stats and all that. Jesper joined the team at the halfway mark of the season, being on SIK’s bench from Matchday 7 and making his debut in that match against Sydney City, being subbed in at half-time. He managed to create some chances in the time he had on the pitch, but it came to nothing as the Australian side prevailed 1-0. By Matchday 12 he found himself as a starter for his club, and the academy title race came down to a tight final day, with three of the top four clubs within a single point of each other. It was an insane final day matchup for SIK against Atletico Medellin, which saw them come back from 4-1 down at the 66th minute to tie the game 4-4, with Jesper registering a goal and an assist. This was, however, not enough to win the title, as Sydney City took the championship in the end. Jesper Sjöman was good for 5 goals and “I couldn’t be bothered to count how many, but at least 1” assists in the 9 matches he appeared in. S21 - Pro Debut In the S21 draft, it took a little while for Jesper’s name to be called. He was eventually picked though, going in the 3rd round to AC Romana. The first season of his proper pro career would be spent with ACR’s minor league team, Inter London. For the club, it was a rough season, as of the 18 games they played, ILFC managed a paltry 3 wins and 1 draw. Even then, this was actually good for 8th place out of 10, as two other teams were actually very marginally worse. Inter did not go far in the Cup either, being easily pushed aside in the first round. For Jesper, it wasn’t much better. In his 20 total appearances, he registered only 4 assists, and he was yet to score a goal at the professional level. S22 - Big Leagues However, Inter London’s poor form and Jesper’s individual mediocrity in his rookie season didn’t dissuade Romana. They needed to fill a roster spot, and they needed Jesper to do it. Thus, the Swede saw his first taste of the Majors. This season was… surprisingly, slightly better? He finally scored that first goal, getting on the board in a 2-1 win against Liffeyside Celtic FC, and his team did win comparatively more matches. ACR did end the season in 8th like London did before, but with 5 wins and 2 draws. The Cup was rough though, another immediate exit. S23 - Breakout Season, Heartbreak, WSFC S23 was crazy for Jesper. He suddenly found incredible form in the league, becoming a real solid offensive contributor for Romana. 3 league goals were a step up from the 1 previously, but the real highlight was his 14 assists, 2nd most in the entire major league. To date, this is by far the most goal contributions Jesper has recorded in a single season. Romana’s cup run started in the qualifying round this time, but it did lead to Jesper’s first cup win, a 4-2 over CS Rova Mpanjaka, where Jesper managed an assist. Their cup run would go no further, though. And the league was… heartbreaking. As divisions were set to be reintroduced, the rules were simple; the top 6 would form next season’s division 1, and the bottom 6 would be relegated. As the season unfolded, it was clear, Romana had a chance. But that chance never came to be. In the end, 3 points separated 6th place Liffeyside from 7th place ACR, sending the Romans down to the lower division. This was also the season of Jesper’s first WSFC. He was a bench player for Norden, but when he was on the pitch, he made sure the opposing team knew it. In his three halves of football he got the chance to play, he scored twice, being awarded PoM in one of his appearances, and leading all Norden players in average rating with a 7.52 (do not talk to me about sample size shhhhh). Alas, this only led to a group stage exit, but Jesper had made his mark and represented his home proudly. S24 - Division 2 Romana came into S24 with some hope. They came so close to Division 1 last season, maybe it was still possible? But this quickly proved to be a pipe dream, as it became clear that ACR was not a Div 1 caliber team, settling into the bottom half of the Div 2 table. An unimpressive campaign ended in a 4th place finish out of 6. The cup was no better; ACR started in the RO16 but were dispatched by AS Paris, a minor league team. For Jesper, this season was a minor step back. He was still producing offensively, the 11 matches played tallying 4 goals and 5 assists, albeit now his opposition was weaker. But the team as a whole was at a standstill. S25 - Two Different Seasons At Once Season 25 was confusing for Romana. On one hand, there was the league. Their season in the league was another display of unimpressive mediocrity. ACR wasn’t a total bottom of the barrel team, they went 6-2-7, but it was just another 4th place finish. Whatever. In the Cup, however, there seemed to be some hope. ACR had to start from the Qualifying Round again, where they beat Tokyo 2-1. They followed this with a 3-1 against Cosmico, and then a 2-1 defeat of Tenochtitlan, who had knocked them out of the Cup a couple seasons before. Suddenly, ACR was in the Cup semi-final. Not only that, but they were up against Liffeyside, another Division 2 side. They’d already gone far, could they go even further? …yeah, no. They bowed out in the semi-finals. While for the team, the season was a mixed bag, for Jesper it just kinda sucked. His production offensively actually got worse, 6 goals and 4 assists in 19 games, and his average rating dropped below 7 for the first time since S22. Let’s hope it gets better. S26 (so far) - Resurgence Hey, guess what, IT GETS BETTER! I mean, it’s still early days, we’re barely over a third of the way through the season, but things are legitimately looking up for ACR. In this first part of the season, there’s been a clear gap between the top and bottom halves of Division 2, and Romana are well within that top half. As of writing this, the Romans sit in 2nd, in a promotion playoff spot. That spot is tenuous, CABA are 1 point behind, but on the other hand, Shanghai is only two points ahead, anything is possible. The Cup is going well so far too, a convincing 5-2 over FC Kaapstad in the Qualifying round, and Shanghai awaits in the RO16. It’s also been a big return to form for Jesper himself, with 3 goals and 3 assists so far he’s near the top of the table in goal contributions, and his average rating has been sitting pretty at 7.46. We’ll see what the rest of this season has in store for Jesper and Romana, but we can only hope for the best. |
