Behind the scenes of Joe's Journey - Haramcha - 2026-09-20
One of the biggest challenges I’ve personally felt in writing Joe’s Journey so far has been the pacing. There are a lot of story ideas floating around, but some of them would require Joe to be at a certain place in his career, whereas others require different timings. As it is not as though all of these ideas just popped up at once, there is often a temptation to intentionally try to delay the progress of time in the story so as to avoid missing out on potential stories that would have needed for Joe to be at the beginning of his career.
For one, as any frequent followers of the stories would be aware, I have been writing these bits where Joe encounters another Thai in Hungary, with both of them having fairly negative responses to one another, having gotten off on the wrong foot. It is inspired by a short story by Tawada Yoko that I read back in June, with the caveat being that I waited long enough to start writing that I would not be able to replicate too much of the tale, thereby hopefully getting my own take on a similar situation. Well, as similar as it ever will be with Joe being a professional footballer. Since the encounters are supposed to not be too long apart, this has meant that I’ve been keeping from progressing the tale all too much timewise. Wanting to later write about Joe’s family’s reactions to his relative wealth (compared to his background anyway!), this also necessitates me not skipping too far ahead.
On the other hand, it does get increasingly difficult to write these stories as there is not that spark which comes with one’s immediate reaction to things. It feels odd writing about tough times and the team being in a relegation struggle when I watch us performing way better week-in week-out.
Having been incredibly busy over the past several weeks (well, months I suppose) sure doesn’t help with writing consistency either. I mean, I could have been writing a proper chapter in the story this week, but instead I am sitting here just before the weekly deadline, writing a quick behind-the-scenes thing while ill, having just returned from an overseas trip last night. Hopefully it’ll get a little easier to find time over the next few weeks, so we can finally catch up to (more or less) the present state of the SSL. It sure would be nice writing about Rapid Magyar actually winning matches.
