- Canadice - 2022-09-19 On September 6th the board handed out a Simmer Fine for a missed player in the 1st Division’s Matchday 12. As one part of the response to this fine, Pau, the manager of Sydney City, listed his entire team as "on the block" to the other managers. Posts in public forums and through various other sources indicated that Sydney players were intending on leaving the league in various ways. As multiple games of the season remained, the BoD began to monitor the situation.

As of today, the board has received confirmation of four trades involving players from Sydney City through public forum posts or confirmation from the receiving manager/team. In total Sydney is giving up 12 of their current 16 players, where all but one player is under contract for S6 and only one player has at the time of writing announced their retirement. In return Sydney receives 3 player assets, one S6 1st, two S6 2nd, one S7 2nd, three S6 3rds, one S6 4th and one S7 4th. When asked about these trades, Pau has expressed that Sydney is in the process of retooling and that he does not want to lose the players for nothing if they are retiring or leaving in free agency. Pau later changes his main reason for trading the players to giving the players what they want, to leave Sydney.

The BoD strongly argues that the return in the trades leads to Sydney losing assets for nothing, just one season earlier. As of writing this post, the current S6 draft class consists of 14 players with one week remaining in the draft eligibility. One round of the draft is made up of 14 picks meaning that in order for the 3rd round picks received to hold any possible value, the class needs to have more than 28 players. Generously considering all of the 2nd round picks to hold any value, the 12 players Sydney is trading out gives them only six usable assets for S6 + one in S7 in return. This does not correspond to the alleged claim of a retool.

Another effect the trades have is the deliberate depreciation of player value. The majority of the traded players are in the top half of earning in their respective class. The players are ranked 11th, 14th, 16th, 19th, 28th, 56th, 57th, 67th, 68th, 126th and 144th in the overall TPE rankings. (We want to note that the 12th player is Accra's new manager-player who is on an expiring contract this season. The BoD is not viewing them as an asset that could be retained by Sydney.) If we look at the players split into their respective draft class, they are ranked 11th, 14th, 21st, 1st, 4th, 6th, 7th, 14th, 15th, 26th, and 8th respectively. Even using the argument that some users are not intending to keep earning or potentially retiring, the quality of the players themselves for one or more seasons at their current level is overall worth more than the current deals. The argument can be made that parts of the confirmed trades are of an expected value, but looking at the bigger picture, that argument does not hold any ground.

We want to emphasize that during this process, we are thinking about player agency. Multiple users in Sydney have expressed their desire to play for another team. Pau has himself touched on this in his responses; users are asking to be removed from the Sydney culture that he has been a part in creating and fostering. While player agency is an important aspect of the league, the BoD does not believe that the trades are made in good faith in regard to this argument and does little to nothing to solve the issue of the negative culture that the users are asking to be removed from.

As per rule 3 in Section 4 Subsection 1, the BoD has the right to remove a team manager from their position if they are no longer performing their duties to an acceptable level. The BoD may include multiple players or a Manager bringing forward concerns regarding a Manager’s performance, multiple instances of breaking rules, instances of missed deadlines, conduct detrimental to the league, or inactivity in the team locker room as evidence of a manager not performing their duties to an acceptable level.

In this case, multiple managers have brought up concerns regarding Sydney management about the posted trades, and the trades listed above in tandem with the negative culture that Sydney has had and Pau admits he's had a part in fostering, are considered by the BoD to be "conduct detrimental to the league". As such the BoD has decided to remove Pau from the duties of managing Sydney effective immediately and the currently posted and confirmed trades with Sydney mentioned in the write-up will be/have been rejected. Sydney is placed under BoD Stewardship up until the time when a replacement manager has been appointed. As part of the BoD Stewardship, there will be an attempt to ensure that the players involved in the rejected trades are able to make use of their agency while securing appropriate value for the future management of Sydney.

This is not a decision we have made lightly, we do not want to interfere with the managers and their work within the league but this is a clear example of when the BoD must take action. Per the history of previous posts on disciplinary measures in the SSL, we would like to remind people to be civil in the comments of this thread and in the different chat-channels. Any issues you might have about this decision can be sent in a DM on the forum to me or on Discord (Canadice#0985). - omniscius - 2022-09-19 Thank you for making this hard decisions BoD. I know some players may not like it, but what Pau was doing was not in the best interest of the league or the players.
