The Sydney FC rebrand to Reykjavik United seemed to have been well received from those around the league. Sydney had a great season in the SSL’s Season 5, but then everything turned around for the team, and as such the team was finding their own identity and their own direction.

Relegation to the SSL’s 2nd Division was the first step in turning things around. Division 1 was difficult with a lot of rookies and young players, so Division 2 would give the players excellent playing time and competition to continue their development. It has done wonders for the team, as the players have much more confidence on the pitch and you can tell they’re playing much better together. This transition was difficult last season, but has proven to be the right move for this young group of players.

Currently, Reykjavik United sit 3rd on the Division 2 table behind Buenos Aires and Paris, two very well built teams. Reykjavik had a great offseason, bringing in a ton of free agents, drafting well and making the necessary adjustments to ensure the core of the team will be moving forward together for a long time. There still are some growing pains, but if this team continue to build strong morale and chemistry together, they will be able to take on any team, and could potentially even see promotion to Division 1 this season.
