Growing up in Italy there’s no secret that football was a huge part of life. However, it really wasn’t something that Roberto thought could be his livelihood and be his passion, not until the 2006 World Cup. The whole country was watching, everyone saw the Italian national team winning games, moving on through the rounds until the ultimate test: France in the World Cup Finals.

Roberto watched that game intently, and when the game was completed, watching his nation lift the world cup was something that he wanted to feel. He watched back a lot of the games and noticed the defensive work done by his county’s back line and the magic that having incredible defenders could do for your team. That’s when he started honing in on his defensive game and working on becoming better. He continued to pour hours of work into it, and it ultimately paid off as he was able to get recognized and eventually join the SSL as a young CB with a ton of potential.

The influence of Italian defensive players over the history of football has truly resonated with the young CB and it shows in his game. He tries to be methodical, efficient, and truly make it so that the ball is recovered by his team and quickly moved up the pitch to his teammates. He’s got a long way to go to be considered alongside some of Italy’s greats, but he’s working on it.
