- boom - 2023-05-19 The SSL has its newest Canadian player, as promising defender Alexandra Laurent of Victoria, BC has recently been announced as the newest member of the SSL Red Academy team, getting her kicks in before she goes into the SSL draft this upcoming season. Laurent initially looks unassuming with her lack of size, but watching the tape on her play showcases a skilled defender. Her biggest assets are her ability to make heads-up plays with the ball to get it downfield for teammates and kickstart offensive attacks for her side, and Laurent has also shown a strong ability to closely defend opponents. Alexandra Laurent isn't the first Canadian player to make some waves in the soccer scene. Several seasons ago, another undersized finesse player in Marianne Maltais went to Seoul Mythic and had an exciting rookie season with 7 goals in 15 league games before fizzling out just as fast as she arrived. Maltais has now retired and is a rising face in the player agent scene, representing such players as Calgary Dragons hockey star Sophie Bordeleau and Kansas City Coyotes quarterback Jake Jefferson. The hope for Laurent is that she will be able to live up to the hype that has been placed on her and become a long-term face in the SSL wherever she goes. |
