what attributes matter? (a goalkeeper analysis) - Maxboi - 2024-12-02

as someone who joined this league in part because I love football manager, this week I think I'm gonna talk about the actual mechanics of how exactly keepers work. What attributes are important, which ones suck, and which ones are explained poorly.

MOST IMPORTANT
starting with the big key ones, at least in terms of shot stopping, we've got agility. I feel like often people don't notice agility for keepers, since it's not a "goalkeeper" stat, but imo it's the most Important. In short, agility is how quickly a keeper gets to a shot. if a keeper has low agility, they aren't gonna save a lot of shots because they won't move fast enough physically to reach the ball. Up next. in the key stats is reflexes. Basically how quickly the keeper reacts to a shot.  The better the reflexes, the better they are at saving close range shots and the earlier they react to shots in general. I would say that the third important stat, although maybe less so than the other two is Ariel reach. This one actually does what it's described as doing, the maximum distance the keeper can reach. helpful for shots into the corners and whatnot, along with claiming crosses. that's basically how saves are determined. Reflexes determine how early he starts, Ariel reach determines how far he goes and agility determines how fast he gets there.

IMPORTANT
One-on-Ones is the goalkeeper’s ability to handle situations where they face an attacker alone, typically on counters and through balls. A higher rating means the keeper is better at closing down attackers and making saves in one-on-one situations, and in my opinion matters more in key situations than the tendency to rush out stat. positioning helps a keeper to be in the right place at the right time. Good positioning often leads to fewer mistakes and better overall performances. a keeper with good communication is also amazing for helping to make a defense work cohesively, mark tighter, and overall play better.

ECCENTRICITY
eccentricity is a weird stat so Im giving it its own section. basically it makes you more random. you'll make some saves that by your stats you have no business making, but on the flip side you also make some egregious mistakes. I personally don't really like it but a little bit is fine if you want some silliness.
