Academy Task 5: S19 Draft Analysis - Pythonic - 2025-01-02

It's that time of the season once again: new creates are pouring into the league, and everybody is getting on their TPE grind to hopefully become the next first overall pick in the draft. The question is, what is the draft currently looking like right now? Who's in the TPE lead? What are the current numbers for positions? All those questions, and more, shall be answered here. Using an extremely complicated model (an Excel spreadsheet), I have garnered class-wide data on the latest draft class in the league. Let's dive right into it!

Let's start with some preliminary information regarding the overall draft with this graph:

So far, there have been 29 players that have created for the upcoming S19 draft class. 34% of those players, 10 of them, are spread evenly (count of 5 & 17% each) between two primary positions: CDs and LAMs. Centre defenders make sense - they're usually the anchor that holds your defense together and stops the ball from getting to your keeper. However, the amount of left attacking midfielders did surprise me quite a bit.

The second most created position is a three-way tie between CDMs, STs, and RMs. CDMs and STs, again make sense, but RMs are one of the most underutilized positions in the league. According to the portal's position tracker, only 5 active primary RMs exist. Assuming this count includes Academy players, currently 60% of active RMs are members of the S19 draft class. Making numbers already!

In third place, a three-way tie again between CAMs, RAMs, and RDs. Nothing really too notable there. Trailing all other positions are CMs, LMs, LWBs, and GKs with 1 create each. Given that there is about an equal number of GKs and teams in the league as of right now, the lack of keeper creates isn't that surprising at all. Our one left midfielder create for this season, Day Walker (@scudmuffin19), makes up 16.67% of all active primary left midfields.

When looking at a draft class's potential order, the first statistic that most people tend to look at is the raw total points earned for each player in the class. As you could expect, we're also starting there! As a note, all numbers are accurate of 1/2/2025.

According to the graph, CDM Cameron Millwall (@stevo) leads the class in points earned with a total of 463 so far. However, his spot at number one is not as secure as he'd like; Aart de Trella (@trëlla) is riding right on his coattails with 462 TPE. The top two is trailed less closely by Monster Energz (@dieSunkenShip) who currently sits at 455 TPE to round out the top 3. I think that with enough luck, any player currently in the top 5 could easily surpass the current holder and claim the number one spot.

Notable point plateaus for players include 432 (30 catch-up TPE, 40 TPE training camp, 6 TPE 12/23 activity check, and 6 TPE 12/30 activity check) and 426 (everything except 12/30 activity check). As predictions are graded and more tasks come up for each player, I'm sure we will see that the spread increases as certain players inevitably fall behind or become inactive.

Our lowest TPE holder is Sonny Boycott (@Chovy2EU), who seems to be boycotting the league as a whole; he has not claimed any TPE since creating on 11/20/2024. It's likely that he will remain our lowest TPE holder in this class.

Speaking of TPE... let's take a look at TPE numbers by position.

As you can see, thanks to Sonny Boycott's boycotting, he drags his fellow RAM Zach Mulder (@MightyMulder), 426 TPE, down to an average positional TPE of just 388. This average represents the crater of average TPE so far.

On the opposite end, the CDs pick up the slack for their position as they lead the class in average positional TPE with 447.20. Aart de Trella of course leads the CDs in TPE with 462, whereas Valentin Morgenstern (@Pythonic) sits last in the position with 432 TPE. CDMs, as one might expect with Cameron Millwall's class-leading 463 TPE, are second in average TPE. Hugh Jeplay (@mystictoejam) is last in the position with 408 TPE.

The tied-for-first most created position LAMs are, unfortunately, second-to-last in average TPE. Joe Mamba (@IR15H0000000000) leads the position with 434 TPE, whereas Elias Kruger (@YetiTaz) is last in the position with just 386, which is also tied for second-to-last in TPE with LaBamba Ball (@MoistNavel).

Something else that needs to be kept in mind for the class is where their loyalties lie in the WSFC. Fret not, for I have gathered that data as well.

The most creates per nation is a four-way tie between the Alpine Federation, the USA, Benelux, and Central Europe. Fittingly, they all have four creates so far. Also interesting is that no one nation has more than 3 creates per position. The USA also has the only goalkeeper create currently in the class, and all five CD creates are in separate nations.

Overall, it looks like this draft class is shaping up to be the one that will shape the defense of many nations to come: the Alpine Federation has 2 defensive players (1 LWB and 1 CD), the USA 3, including goalkeepers, (2 CDM and 1 GK), and two nations whose sole create is a CD. Canada's only create is a RD as well.

However, it seems as if Benelux's and the British Isles' offense is what is going to be put together most with this class's players. They both have 3 players who are midfield or attackers.

Overall, I could see several players in the current class going first overall. The obvious candidate would be Cameron Millwall, the class's leader in TPE, but depending on a team's particular positional needs, I could see Aart de Trella or even Coin Flip being chosen. However, that's a nil point if a team wants a solid attacker who can put pressure on the other end of the field. In this case, I would expect a team to pick up CAM Monster Energz (455 TPE), or positional TPE leader (with an even 444) ST Tre Qartista (@ulaire) at first overall. However, I wouldn't discredit from a team who needs offense from picking Aart de Trella either -- the primary CD is also a secondary ST, with a powerful foot and a freakish build to boot.
