Task 5: Reliving Franco Torres - r1c3bowl22 - 2025-01-28

Franco Torres faced an uphill battle ever since his first days in the SSL. A relatively unknown prospect, Torres entered the inaugural SSL Draft with little fanfare. Due to not having many connections in the football world, Torres would have to wait a very long time for his name to be called. Finally being taken by Cairo City FC with the first pick in the ninth and final round (49th overall), it would be the last time Torres wouldn't be front and centre in the SSL.

He immediately hit the ground running. After the first SSL season, he would end up being the joint-winner of the SSL Golden Boot. That season also saw him win the SSL Major Division Championship with Cairo, which led to his being named in the inaugural team of the year and winning the first ever SSL MVP award. With that, the bar was set. And Torres had no plans of slowing down.

Unfortunately for him, Cairo City FC was badly mismanaged for much of the next few seasons. There even arose many rumours of Torres being unhappy with the situation in Cairo and looking for a way out. Ultimately, he decided for the better of the team, he'd stay and help the team regain its former glory. Cairo City would never win the Championship, or any trophy, with Torres again. Torres, in turn, would only see success in the form of a team of the year inclusion in Season 6.

In fact, it wasn't until Torres moved to Buenos Aires that he finally got a taste of victory again. In Season 9, he lifted the SSL Cup with his new team, finding the form that helped him propel his former team to similar heights. In doing so, Torres won the SSL Golden Boot and MVP awards in the process. The following season, Torres would help Buenos Aires win the Championship, with the player finally winning it for the first time since it was first contested.

Torres would be included in the S11 team of the year, before having a relatively quiet season in Season 12. However, in Season 13, he came back on a mission to prove that he still had more to give. He was a player possessed. Torres would replicate his success from the inaugural season, winning the league championship with Reykjavik, on his way to capturing the SSL Golden Boot and MVP, as well as another team of the year inclusion. By winning the MVP award that season, Torres would become the first and currently only player to ever win the MVP with three different teams. That season was notable for Reykjavik as well as it was the second largest margin of victory by a team in SSL history. As of this writing, Torres and Gordon Bombay, the former Hollywood FC legend are the only two players to win the MVP award three times.

In his final hurrah, Franco Torres would win the SSL Cup in S14 with Tokyo FC.

It's been fun reliving the days of Franco Torres. And now with the player being linked with up and comer Kim Heung-Min, the SSL could be in for another treat.
