Art In Motion - Cycro - 2025-02-03

Breathe in.

Morning dew upon freshly hewn grass. The acrid burn of sprayed paint lines, still wet despite the shining mid morning sun. Lavender, from the bargain brand laundry detergent still clinging to a crisp jersey.

Breathe out. Eyes up.

Sharp sunlight floods his sight. He adjusts quickly, but even before he can fully see his legs are pumping. Everything snaps into motion, his zen calm evaporating into striking action. He can feel his mark shifting left behind him, can hear the slip of boots on wet grass, but his eyes are already on the ball. He’s let his speed drop just a touch, hoping the midfielder will catch the bait and send a pass his way.

Success.

The ball is a high one, grass and debris following its long arc over his teammates heads. He can tell from experience where the ball will land and he launches off again, now full speed as he moves to undercut his mark. He shoves off with both feet, hard, launching his body into the air with perfect timing and grace. His eyes don’t leave the ball. They don’t have to. He shifts his head to one side, ready to deliver a solid knock to the ball with his right brow and send it flying to his waiting teammate.

Wind up. Tense. Release.

Suddenly, everything is dark and ringing. He opens his eyes, then swiftly closes them again as the direct sun attempts to melt his retinas.

For anyone else, the obvious concussion would be the end of practice.

For Jakob Fensterhausen, it’s just Tuesday.
