GRADED: Interview with Pablo Kawaski, Goalkeeper for Stockholm IK, after the 3-0 loss - Marmelad - 2025-03-27

Journalist: Pablo, a tough end to the season with a 3-0 loss to Atlético Medellin. How do you feel about the match and the three goals?

Pablo Kawaski: To be honest, I'm really disappointed with how we performed today. It’s not the way I wanted to end the season. The goals were avoidable, and I feel like we were passive throughout the match.

Journalist: Let’s go through the goals. The first goal came after a failed clearance by one of your defenders. What happened there?

Pablo Kawaski: Yes, that was frustrating. We had the chance to clear the ball, but the defender mishit it, and from there, Medellin was able to exploit the situation. We became too passive and allowed them to drive through our defense. They got the space they needed and scored. It’s something we should have done better with—more intensity, more aggression.

Journalist: The second goal was another tough one. What went wrong there?

Pablo Kawaski: That one really hurt. We were again too passive in our defending. Medellin played the ball out wide, and their winger drove inside. The pass was deflected off Michael Schumacher and hit me, leaving me completely off balance. It wasn’t ideal, and the ball went into the net. It’s a tough one for me, but as a team, we should have stopped the ball before it got to that point.

Journalist: Finally, the third goal came from a quick free-kick taken by Medellin. How did that develop?

Pablo Kawaski: It was poor from us all around. We didn’t defend the quick free-kick properly, and they got it to a player who was wide open just outside the box. The pass came in, and he placed it easily past me. We shouldn’t have been caught off guard like that, especially at this stage of the season. We didn’t defend it with the right focus or intensity.

Journalist: It’s clear the team struggled with defensive structure today. How do you think you can improve for the future?

Pablo Kawaski: There are a lot of things we need to address, especially our mentality. We can’t afford to be passive. We need to be tougher, more aggressive, and not let teams dictate the game like this. We’re better than what we showed today. We need to work harder as a unit, from the defense all the way up to the forwards. It’s disappointing, but it’s something we need to learn from.

Journalist: I know there has been some talk about the team’s focus today. It seemed like some of the players may have been distracted, possibly with the upcoming draft. Do you think that affected the team’s performance?

Pablo Kawaski: I can’t deny that the upcoming draft was on the minds of some players, and it might have played a part in our lack of focus today. It’s something that’s hard to ignore, especially with the uncertainty it brings. But as professionals, we need to be able to separate that from our performances on the pitch. We just didn’t show the level of focus and commitment needed for a match like this.

Studio Discussion:

Kate Abdo (Host): A tough performance from Stockholm IK today, and some real questions to be asked about their season finale. Let’s start with Ben Kaufmann. Despite some of the team’s overall struggles, he’s been criticized for his passivity on the pitch. What do you think, Zlatan?

Zlatan Ibrahimović: Kaufmann’s passivity is really frustrating to watch. At this level, you can’t afford to be passive, especially in big moments. He has the talent, but he needs to be more aggressive. He should show that he’s not someone teams can just push around. He needs to stop being so easy to play against. He’s got to step up, be tougher, and start showing a bit of arrogance. That’s what separates the good players from the great ones.

Kate Abdo: Absolutely. And looking at the whole team, the performance today was nothing short of disrespectful to their fans. Arjen, how do you feel about the team’s attitude in this match?

Arjen Robben: It’s unacceptable. This is the last match of the season, and you can’t finish like this. The fans deserve more. It was passive, lazy football, and that’s not what the supporters come to see. It’s disrespectful. This kind of performance is a slap in the face to everyone who has supported the team all season. There’s no excuse for this level of play, especially when you have a chance to end the season on a high note.

Gonzalo Higuaín: I agree with Arjen. There was no fight, no passion. The defense was embarrassing—letting the opposition come at you like that, especially when you’ve got a goalkeeper like Kawaski who’s been doing everything he can to keep you in the game. The defense was just handing over the responsibility to him, and it’s not fair. As a team, you need to stand up and take responsibility, not leave everything to the keeper.

Kate Abdo: Let’s talk about Pablo Kawaski now. He’s been the one bright spot for Stockholm IK this season. What did you think of his performance today, especially considering the result?

Zlatan Ibrahimović: Pablo was the only one who really showed any heart today. Without him, this could have been an even bigger loss. He’s been carrying this team all season, and it’s clear that he cares about the club. If he keeps performing at this level, he could end up among the best goalkeepers ever. But it’s frustrating to see him not getting the support he deserves from the outfield players.

Arjen Robben: Kawaski has been exceptional, and today, once again, he was the only one who looked like he cared. He was let down by the defense, but you can’t question his commitment or ability. If he keeps this up, he could be regarded as one of the best. The problem is, this team needs to start supporting him and showing the same level of commitment.

Gonzalo Higuaín: Exactly. He’s the only one who’s consistently shown that he cares about the club. If the team had shown half the intensity he has, this would have been a very different match. He deserves much better from his teammates.

Kate Abdo: It’s clear that Kawaski has been the standout player this season, but the team needs to step up. Let’s hope they learn from this and come back stronger next season.
