Slow start for a difficult build. - woog - 2025-09-06

I didn't build Tlacaelel Tepoztli to be easy, and I'm not too surprised to find his early games aren't looking easy for him.

The main premise of the player started off as this: "what if I pick two mismatched positions and focus my spending on the attributes that matter to both positions above all else?"

Easy to say. I picked wingback and striker and gave it a shot in the academy. There, playing in the kiddie pool, it worked ok. He wasn't among his team's top 3 players, but he was impactful from time to time.

After the academy season, I had him ditch striker to play CAM - Shadow Striker instead. Good for a player who starts further back and aims for an opportune strike, especially from distance. It hasn't worked for him so far. No goals, no assists, and game ratings under 7 for the most part.

The minor league is a big jump up from the academy, facing players with a lot more TPE than a fresh academy grad. For all that I want Tlacaelel to make a mark by being unexpected, and by being a player a tactician can employ in different ways, he seems to need a stronger foundation in more basics before his intended offensive versatility becomes useful enough to be worth the weaknesses of his game.

So be it. On an expansion team, I have time to grow, and suck. I'll suck. And I'll grow.

Fun article -- it is well-developed, clear, and engaging. It presents the background logic for the build effectively and flows well. Only minor stylistic refinements would improve the piece, such as noting such interesting statistics that inform the slow start narrative.
