Head-to-Heads Are All the Difference Through Five Matches - Jiggy - 2025-09-07

Four wins. One draw. Zero losses.

It’s been a tremendous start to the Major League season for Reykjavik United, who currently sits atop the SSL table with 13 points.

Through the first five matches, Uniao Sao Paulo has accumulated 11 points with three wins and two draws. Defending champion Hollywood FC rounds out the top tier with 10 total points on three wins, one draw and one loss thus far.

Reykjavik is primarily buoyed by a 3-1 head-to-head victory over Hollywood on S22’s Matchday 1. It was an impressive win and offensive flurry over what is arguably the SSL’s stringiest defensive club. Meanwhile Sao Paulo blanked CD Tenochtitlan 1-0 in their own opener.

Matchday 2 saw Sao Paulo and Hollywood face off and resulted in a 1-1 draw, limiting both teams to accruing a single point each. Meanwhile, Reykjavik kept the offense going with a 5-3 win against CA Buenos Aires to climb atop the table, where they have not yet looked back.

On Matchday 3, Reykjavik bested Liffeyside Celtic FC 2-1, notching their third consecutive win to start the season. Sao Paulo cruised to an impressive 5-1 win over Buenos Aires and Hollywood blanked Xelaju Cosmico FC 2-0 to keep pace.

All three clubs claimed victories on Matchday 4, with Reykjavik topping Shanghai 5-3, Sao Paulo shutting out Liffeyside 4-0 and Hollywood outpacing Schwarzwalkder FV by a 6-4 final.

Matchday 5 featured a head-to-head contest between Reykjavik and Sao Paulo, and neither blinked, battling tit-for-tat to a 2-2 final draw. For their part, Hollywood FC took care of their business with a 4-3 win over Tokyo.

There are still 17 more matches to go over the course of the S22 season, and plenty of opportunities for positional changes among these three clubs who should remain at the top of the table. Their collective head-to-head results could remain the difference at season’s end.

Though it’s incredibly early, it’s extremely notable that none of these three teams have failed to win a match that was not played against the other.

To this point, neither Sao Paulo nor Reykjavik has lost a match – and the two clubs battled to a draw in their lone matchup. However, Reykjavik was able to defeat Hollywood in their first contest while Sao Paulo’s match against Hollywood ended in a draw. And the story of these games tells the entire tale of the current table standings.

I mean Reyk is certainly a powerhouse, everyone knows it. Solid review though
