Reflecting Upon My Academy Season - Lpapi - 2025-10-14 For the SSL Player's Tribune: Lucas Peioxoto reflects on a successful season in the SSL Academy and looks forward to the Draft Boarding my flight out of Medellin was bittersweet. I was looking forward to going home and getting some offseason training in before the SSL draft, but it wasn't without its hardships. I knew it would be the last time I would see many of the familiar faces at Medellin for many months or even years. Now on my long trip back to San Diego, I can't help but look back on my journey in the academy. It feels like just yesterday that I was getting acclimated to the club and learning the names of the staff. I had been completely unfamiliar with the SSL(and simulation leagues in general) before seeing an advertisement to join. It was a great pleasure to discover the community(of footballers) that is involved with the league. The SSL academy is self contained but I got the chance to interact with many members of the major and minor teams who offered support, guidance, and insight into the world of the SSL. Our team and my individual performance was pretty good but unfortunately we came up short in the end. I finished with 1 goal, 9 assists, 7.45 avg rating, 20 chances created, 55 dribbles, 46 tackles, 32 interceptions, good for top 5 in almost all of those metrics. I was especially effective on corners possibly due to my ability to put curve on the ball. I know I will have to get faster, stronger, jump higher, and improve my work rate and concentration to perform for a minor or major club. Training between now and next season will be essential to make the jump to the next level. There is a nice long break from the end of the academy season until the end of the offseason to get that training in. For most SSL players it is a reprieve but for us academy graduates it is a whirlwind. First comes the last minute scouting with SSL organizations then the draft itself. The excitement of the draft, the new roles that many of us will be asked to fill, and the new locker room to meet are exciting but hectic. It will be a great joy to see my teammates at Medellin be drafted, four of us should be relatively strong selections. With 12 orgs it is unlikely that any of us end up together but we will always be connected from our time at Medellin. Good luck to the rest of the S23 draft class! RE: Reflecting Upon My Academy Season - Matt Turk - 2025-11-06 A great first season. And many more to come, surely. Media Grade 4/5 |
