No Time for Self-Congratulations for Shaheen - Jiggy - 2025-10-25

Third place.

That’s truly an excellent season for most clubs. It should be nothing to hang one’s hat over. It should be cause for celebration. For optimism. For motivation to continue the current course.

Reykjavik United is not most clubs. At least not in the eyes of attacking middle man George Shaheen, who has had a taste of Cup victories and Majors Championships and has spoiled his buds into believing only those prizes denote success. And that anything else leaves no time for back-patting because all time needs to be dedicated to work that needs to be done to improve.

And so that’s the attitude Shaheen has taken into this offseason. His club having with 16 wins, four losses, and two draws – resulting in 50 total table points and a third place finish in the Major Leagues of the SSL. They were a full seven table points ahead of Schwarzwalder FV, who themselves were nine points better than the next club in the standings.

Obviously, Reyjkavik was a tier above some.

But their finish left them two points behind Hollywood FC, who finished with a one-better total of 17 wins. It also left them a clear seven points behind Majors champion Unia Sao Paulo, who notched 18 wins, lost just one match, and had three draws for a 57-point season.

There is work to be done to overcome these teams, and Shaheen is wasting no time with “well dones” and self-congratulations. It is time to train. To improve. To be better next season personally so Reyjkavik United can be better than the rest next season.

When you have tasted glory, you are willing to settle for nothing less.
