Excitement Builds in Reykjavik After Matchday 1 Win - Jiggy - 2025-11-09 One game in. One win earned. Three table points to kick off the S23 campaign. Things went about as well as they possibly could for Reyjkavik United on Matchday 1, as the club bested Shanghai Dragon FC by a score of three to nil. Mikko Rashford II earned Person of the Match honors, netting two goals - one at the 40-minute mark and another at the 53-minute mark. It was also a really nice matchday performance for right attacking midfielder George Shaheen, who got the scoring started for Reykjavik with the season's first goal at the 13-minute mark. Brick Wall Jr. dazzled in goal, earning a clean sheet while defending 8 shots on target. The Reykjavik defense was under pressure for much of the afternoon, yielding the time-of-possession to Shanghai 38% to 62%. Though they bent, the defense - and Brick Wall Jr. in particular - did not break. The Rashford-Shaheen scoring effort was aided by assists from Santos Neymarinho and Alessandro Del Pirlo. Having each of these top four offensive stars involved in the chance creation and shot finishing mix for opening day - and seeing Brick Wall Jr. live up to his name - has to give the fans in Reykjavik excitement for what this season may hold. Matchday 2, scheduled for 11 November, will see Reykjavik take on CD Tenochtitlan and seek to keep both the impressive offense and impressive defense performances going.
