Part 2 of the SSL Nuzlocke: Slaughter - Mafx - 2026-02-11 The SSL finally started! and that means that we need to take into account the results of MD1 before doing anything else, those would be: Catlunya 2 - 1 Schwarzwälder Xelaju 4 - 2 CABA Tokyo 1 - 0 Romana So, we have to determine which representative from Schwarzwälder and CABA get the axe. Romana only has Eyndhoven the Butterfly on their ranks so there's no need to spin a wheel for him as he will be killed off automatically. So, 4 Pokemon go to the wheel and only two will leave unscathed (for now), the (un)lucky ones are... ![]() This means that, due to the losses of their teams, Kilgannon the Poochyena and Rivers the Tentacool are considered to have been killed, but we gotta move forward. Last time we were asked to deliver some submarine plans to an engineer in Slateport City, which again, why aren't you calling the equivalent of the USPS to do this but whatever. We get onto the ship that brought us over to Dewford and tell them to steer towards the port city, after a short cutscene we arrive on it's beach which is full of trainers that we navigate carefully to not have any unpredictable losses. We go to deliver the pieces and check out the museum while on the city, which has a lot of persons in weird uniforms that at the moment haven't committed any acts of terrorism yet so they aren't actively pursued by the police. However they gotta start somewhere and they try to snatch away the documents we are meant to deliver so we engage in battle, Lee the Makuhita puts in a lot of work and is able to defeat the grown adults, that, upon being bested by an 11 year old need to be bailed out by their boss to make their escape, what a weird group of people that is, surely this is the last we see of them. ![]() After that encounter I would like to go into a tangent, specifically towards Pokemon Emerald speedrunning scene, why is that? Because the next battle, the second encounter with your rival, May, is considered to be the single most difficult fight of the entire game for them, and that's because the Speedrunners pick Mudkip, the water starter that by this point has become a Marshtomp a Water/Ground Pokémon that only has one weakness, Grass type moves that deal 4x the usual damage on Marshtomp as both Water and Ground are weak against grass, adding to that aside from the rival (that always picks the starter that your choice is weak against) theres only like 2 or 3 mandatory trainers that have a grass type Pokemon in the whole game, making Mudkip objectively the single best option to pick for an starter. ![]() Why is this important? because since we picked Torchic, now a Combusken, we've given Marshtomp to our rival and fate has given us two grass Pokemon to make this fight a walk in the park (in comparison) to what was described above, Mobek the Lombre and out newest addition that joins Romana's Bench, Francis the Oddish are able to deal with Marshtomp just fine, the rest of the team supporting them to eliminate May's other Pokemons. ![]() We reach Mauville city and head straight for the Bike shop we choose the Mach option because going fast is better than doing tricks and we pick up our second and last encounter of the split going to the east of the city, Bonito, the Ilumise joins the team as the third member of Catalunya, although sadly I don't think we're going to see much of him as Ilumise is... not that good, but oh well, lets go into the gym already and fight Wattson. ![]() You know another reason why Mudkip/Marshtomp are so good in the speedrunning scene?, because they trivialize this fight, Wattson, as his name implies is an Electric type gym leader, and unless you got lucky in granite cave and got a Geodude as an encounter Marshtomp is quite literally the only reliable and consistent ground type you can have at this point in the game, which is the Electric types only weakness. If you do not have it then... it gets rough, and sadly for our run this battle was a slaughter. ![]() Williams the Loudred was the first to fall, he wasn't able to withstand a selfdestruct from Wattson's first Pokemon, however, the team was able to answer both his Electrike and Magneton, only one death isn't the worst, right? That was until the ace, Manectric, showed up. ![]() This guy outspeeds my whole team because most of them are paralyzed, so the only way we can get out alive that I can see is to poison the guy and stall him out until he finally dies, Francis the Gloom who we just picked up earlier does the job but can't take another hit so we bet on our starter, Kawasaki the Combusken to survive the incoming shot but... It's no use However even with the death of our starter this savage beast wants more blood to be shed, poison isn't enough on its own to kill this thing and since whenever their Pokemon are in low health the gym leader tends to use healing items on them to restore HP. Meaning that we still had to do some sort of damage to meaningfully progress the fight, and in order to do that we needed to sacrifice two very valuable Pokemon, Lee the Makuhita and Mizukana, the Gyarados who played an integral part on this stalemate by baiting electric moves that Francis could resist on the switch, then coming back again to take the quick attack aimed at Francis and bait an electric move, this song and dance bought us 2 turns of poison chip that were massive for us to survive. ![]() Eventually, the beast falls, and with it most of our available Pokemon, out of the 6 that entered this battle only two were able to make it out. ![]() This is the list of the available Pokemon that we have left, I'm able to field both Jenkins and Bonito from Catalunya due to the exemption in the case there were no one available to fill in a full party, but that aside knowing that the next set of results will kill some of them things aren't looking quite good, however, there's a bright side. We're down but not out, let me explain. MD3, the next matchday that will have an impact on this series will consist of the following match ups:
What this means is that even in the worst case scenario (Schwarzwälder and Tokyo win and Xelaju and Romana don't draw) we still would have at least two Pokemon available to keep going, and the next split will bring us a huge box refill so we're still in this (barely). Lastly, the image of the randomly picked names for the encounters (and all the other images of this split) can be found in this Imgur album. Until next time! |
