Academy Prospect Kasak eyes Hometown Club
We meet with Nick Kasak, newly accepted in the SSL academy, on the outskirts of Thames Arena, home to his local team, Inter London.
"Are they gonna let us in?" the young winger, even though he has spent many matchdays here as a spectator, is desperate to see behind the gates and onto the pitch, but today our access is limited to just the outside.
"Even just playing here, on this pitch, not even for this team, would be a dream for me." He seems comfortable here, shaking hands and greeting locals, eager to see their local boy come good since his acceptance into the academy.
Keen to impress, but also not limit his options, Kasak expands on his hopes for his nascent career in a nearby café.
"Reykjavik and Rome have always been places I've wanted to live, I went to Tokyo as a child and that was so eye-opening too. I just can't wait to get started!"
Although wide eyed and perhaps a bit naïve, there is some restraint here too, avoiding a traditional greasy breakfast in favour of something healthy. "You've got to respect the commitment of those who have come before you, haven't you. I know I've got to earn my place in this league. To... fight for it. Nothing is guaranteed, of course..."
Nick drifts off momentarily "I feel like there's a real excitement about this academy class, I just hope I can rise to the occasion and be one of the best." He pauses for a beat. "No, the best."
Early days for this academy prospect, who is surely counting down the days until the draft and find out where his career is headed. Whichever team he ends up at, will surely find a warm welcome at the Thames Arena.
