So, when I laid out the scenarios Uniao Sao Paulo would need in order to obtain promotion, I really could not have imagined that actually taking place. Somehow, and even with a minus 5 goal differential, which could have been a tie-breaker that would have bit us in the ass had things fallen another way, we made it to second place in the second division table. Uniao Sao Paulo was promoted to the first division! To have accomplished this in our first year, with a rag-tag group of cast-offs - some who were categorized as "Shitty Assets" by other general mangers - and unfortunately, some IA players, is truly a feat to behold. Good on Matty and Laser for putting in the hard work and for putting us in the position to make them look very, very good.
We had to win our last two, no matter what, so the team knew what was in front of us. We could not concern ourselves with what was going on with the other games during those weeks. Had we gotten caught scoreboard watching, that is when we could have given the opening our opponents needed to swoop in and crush our dreams right in front of us. Thankfully, we won those games, the other contenders did not win theirs, and we made it to second in the table with 16 points. Kaapstad and Montreal were both very deserving, so each would have been ready to make some noise in the first division, to be sure. That being said, it is now up to us in Sao Paulo to do our thing. Adding Coffee Biscuit and Dorian Lexington, both from Montreal United, has helped us shore up both our defense and our attack. With the bump up in competition, we will need to be strong defensively, as division 1 attacks are much stronger, and we will need to score some goals if we wish to survive and stay up this year. So, we shall see how it goes. I am so proud of my squad!
