SSL National Teams, Part 2: The groups
#1
Article 1: Set-up and Teams

The first article is linked above, and will tell more about the set-up and teams in this tournament. In this article I will go over the groups, what the results were, and which teams will make it to the quarterfinals.

Now onto the actual matches. First off a small note that I messed up the groups, they were not random and were made by the order in which you inserted the teams, which in this case means alphabetical order. Of course the start is the group phase where we have 4 groups consisting of 4 teams each, who play each other once with the top 2 going through to the knock-outs.

Let’s start with group A which consists of Africa (4), the Americas (10), Asia-Oceania (12), and Australia (16). Obviously Africa is the big favorite in this group, with a close 2nd place battle expected between the Americas and Asia-Oceania. In MD1 Africa met up with Australia managing to beat them 1-0, while the Americas and Asia-Oceania drew 1-1. With these results Africa took an early lead in the group, which they managed to extend in MD2 by winning 1-0 against the Americas while Asia-Oceania beat Australia 3-1. With these results Australia was officially knocked out, while Africa was through to the next round. In the last matchday the Americas won 4-0 against Australia while Africa drew 0-0 against Asia-Oceania. Which meant Africa and Asia-Oceania were through.

Africa, GD +2, Points 7
Asia-Oceania, GD +2, Points 5
Americas, GD +3, Points 4
Australia, GD -7, Points 0

Onto group B which contains Canada (5), the British Isles (6), England (11), and Eastern Europe (13), This group looks like one which has 2 teams fighting for the win in the British Isles, and Canada while England, and Eastern Europe are fighting to get 3rd. In the first matchday Canada took it up against Eastern Europe where East Europe came up with a 1-0 win, while in the other match the British Isles won 1-0 against England. In the 2nd matchday England played against Eastern Europe in a match which ended in a goalless draw, while Canada lost 1-3 against the British Isles. These results meant that the British Isles were officially through while Canada was surprisingly knocked out. The last matchday for this group ended in England and Canada drawing 0-0. With the same result happening in the Eastern Europe against British Isles match. Which meant the British Isles, and Eastern Europe are through to the knock-outs

British Isles, GD +3, Points 7
Eastern Europe, GD +1, Points 5
England, GD -1, Points 2
Canada, GD -3, Points 1

Now onto group C, this group consisted of Scandinavia (1), Southern Europe (8), Italy-Switzerland (9), and Germany (14). With this group having tournament favorite Scandinavia the expectations are obviously that Scandinavia manages to get out of the group. The 2nd place is looking to be a fight between Southern Europe, and Italy-Switzerland. Matchday 1 matched Scandinavia against Italy-Switzerland which Scandinavia won 3-0, and Southern Europe against Germany which ended in a 3-0 win for Southern Europe. In matchday 2, Scandinavia continued its domination beating Southern Europe 3-1 while Italy-Switzerland won 2-0 against Germany. Which meant that Scandinavia was officially through, with Germany being officially out. In matchday 3 Scandinavia beat Germany 2-0 to secure first in the group, while the deciding match between Southern Europe, and Italy-Switzerland ended in a 2-1 win for Southern Europe meaning that Scandinavia, and Southern Europe are through to the knockouts.

Scandinavia, GD +7, Points 9
Southern Europe, GD +1, Points 6
Italy-Switzerland, GD -2, Points 3
Germany, GD -7, Points 0

Then now onto the final group containing Western Europe (2), USA O23 (3), USA U23 (7), and USA U21 (15). With Western Europe and USA O23 being 2 of the tournament favorites this group looks to be pretty much decided. But mauve USA U23, or USA U21 can provide an upset. In MD1 the USA U21 met with USA U23 with the U23 team winning 3-1. On another pitch USA O23 drew 0-0 against Western Europe. In MD2 USA U21 lost 0-1 against USA O23, while USA U23 lost 2-3 against Western Europe. Which meant going into MD3 USA U21 was knocked out, while the other 3 teams were within 1 point. This final matchday started with USA U23 winning 2-0 against USA O23, while Western Europe drew 0-0 with USA U21 to get USA U23, and Western Europe through.

USA U23, GD +3, Points 6
Western Europe, GD +1, Points 5
USA O23, GD +4, Points 4
USA U21, GD -3, Points 1

So for the next article which might be coming later this week, or next week we have the quarter finals (and most likely the rest of the tournament) which will be a bit more in-depth than just the scores. The matches will be:
USA U23 (D1, 7) - Southern Europe (C2, 8)
British Isles (B1, 6) - Asia-Oceania (A2, 12)
Scandinavia (C1, 1) - Western Europe (D2, 2)
Africa (A1, 4) - Eastern Europe (B2, 13)

So obviously a match of titans between Scandinavia and Western Europe the expected best, and 2nd best team. While Eastern Europe, and Asia-Oceania will be looking for upsets against Africa, and the British Isles respectively. Meanwhile USA U23 will be playing in a close match against Southern Europe.
