Is he a bust? A one year perspective on Momo Adamu #91
#1
Coming into the S10 SSL Draft, few discussed Momo Adamu as a top prospect. The Nigerian defender was an overager who showed good instincts, but completely lacked flash. His profile from the academy days was not one fans really paid much attention to—he was a defender who liked to defend and made the smart, small play to help keep SSL Blue winning.

Once Cairo drafted him at 3rd overall, Cairo City fans around the world scratched their heads. Many wondered who this mysterious wing back is, and the draft announcers had very little nice to say about the pick compared to some of the flashier players taken at the top of the draft.
After his rookie season with Cairo, how does that pick look?

Immediately, Adamu was thrown into the starting lineup alongside fellow rookie Alexandra Laurent. The new manager committed fully to the youth movement reshaping their defensive structure. Generally, the duo weren’t the most impressive as Cairo continues to struggle on the pitch as the worst defensive team in Division 2 while remaining one of the worst offensive teams in all of SSL. Adamu had the second worst average rating in Division 2 (only Laurent was lower). However, Adamu was one of the most effective tacklers in the division with 35 wins (3rd) on 40 attempts (87.5%, 16th in D2) and 7 key tackles (second in D2 to only Pork Tenderloin’s 8). He also had decent numbers with 48 interceptions and 85 clearances. Unfortunately, the supposed wingback was anathema to scoring, bringing little to no offensive support for the goal starved team. For the second straight season, he had an abysmal cross percentage. It’s clearly a part of his game Adamu likes, but so far it’s just not working for him.

Cairo City must hope, under yet another manager, the influx of offensive talent with this recent prospect crop will help bring the team out of the dregs of Group 2. If not, it’s hard to see Momo Adamu lasting through another regime change before he’s out of the league.
