Reykjavik Inching Upward In The Table
#1
Don’t look now, but Reykjavik United is making a bit of a move in the SSL Major League standings.

When last we checked in, the club had soft-started to just a 4-2-2 record, which had left them two points behind Schwarzwalder FV and a full eight points behind Uniao Sao Paulo, who had raced off to a 7-0-1 record.

Reykjavik has since turned things fully on, winning its next five matches to leap five points ahead of Schwarzwalder FV and climb within six points of Sao Paulo. During this four-game stretch, which began on 7 May, Reykjavik has defeated Hollywood FC (3-1), CA Buenos Aires (2-0), Tokyo S.C. (2-0), Shanghai Dragons FC (3-1), and Schwarzwalder (5-0).

Their next Major League match, scheduled for 21 May, pits the club against CF Catalunya, who currently occupies the second lowest spot on the table, presenting a good opportunity for Reykjavik to keep its win streak going.

Reykjavik’s sudden surge in success has been fueled by their defensive play. They’ve collected three clean sheets in five matches, improving their goals for and allowed differential to +19 (36 goals for, 17 goals allowed), good for the second best in the league behind only first place Sao Paulo.

Sao Paulo for their part has not shown much signs of slowing down. During this same stretch of matches, they have managed four wins and one draw, providing minimal opportunity for Reykjavik to make up ground with the latter’s 3-point efforts. But over the course of a long season, every point matters. Reykjavik’s job from here is to keep pace of the league leader and take advantage of those point-makeup opportunities on those currently rare occasions they do arise.
