Not much is known about how Kaspars Kalinins’ career will shape up, as we don’t know yet where he’ll play, in what role, or whether he’ll even make the cut. But if we take a moment to consider a timeline where none of those things are an issue, there is ample playing time to be had, a roster that compliments his style, and of course, a grand furthering of the training plan, what would a Kalinins lead team look like?
Well, I think the team would revolve around some strong wings, and a dominant, aggressive center back, perhaps even a duo. I would imagine a sweeper goaltender, who can clear the ball out to the wings regularly, and with ease. I would imagine a strong focus on lateral movement, having players up the middle of the field liaison between the two outside columns. I wouldn’t imagine this roster construction as horizontal lines, walls of defence to overcome, but silos that act as their own units, a left, a centre, and a right.
This would culminate in a dominance from the corner, and likely a central striker with a great head, both a testament to their quickness of mind, but also their precision with their header shots.
And of course, Kaspars Kalinins would be the kingpin, the commander of the middle’s middle. The flexible but opaque force that decides up, down, left, or right. That’s what’s in my mind!
