Reykjavik is Perfect No More

Perfect no more.

Reykjavik United was stung by a 1-2 defeat at the hands of Hollywood FC, dropping their first match of the S23 campaign.

With a 3-win, 1-loss record, Reykjavik now sits one table point behind CA Buenos Aires in the Major League standings through four matches.

While second place is an admirable start, Reykjavik had been playing the type of football in these beginning weeks of the season they had hoped would provide some early separation between them and the rest of the upper tier of the SSL. Reykjavik has scored 13 goals thus far, second only to Buenos Aires who has netted 14 goals. And Reykjavik has allowed just four opponent goals through four matches, presenting the stingiest defensive effort in all the league.

Their plus-nine goal differential is tops in the SSL, with Buenos Aires’ plus-seven the next best mark.

Including Matchday 4, recent opponent Hollywood FC has scored just eight goals on the season, ranking third from the bottom of the league in offensive output, but has defended the net well, allowing just six goals, second best behind Reykjavik.

Through four matches, there are five teams within one-game’s worth of table points from each other in the standings. After Buenos Aires and Reykjavik, three teams – A.C. Romana, Unaio Sao Paulo, and Hollywood FC – each have seven points in the table, posting a 2-1-1 overall record in various different ways.

It is obviously early. One might think it greedy to expect to remain unbeaten, even through just four contests. But expectations always run high for Reykjavik United.

Despite Matchday 4’s loss, it goes without saying that so long as Reykjavik is among the league’s best scoring teams AND the league’s best defensive teams, they should consistently find successful results as the season tracks on.

No one is perfect. But it's a long season, we'll see if Reykjavik catches up.
