Halfway through the CS Rova Mpanjaka season, we were flying on top of the world. We'd pulled off a clutch 1-0 victory against AS Paris in our 12th match of the season to move us to a 9-3 record, just a single match behind Paris for the lead in the SSL Minors Division though they had the tiebreaker on us. Our last match before the holiday season would see us travelling to Montreal to face off in our last match before the holiday break. I was excited beyond belief for this trip as I'd get to spend Christmas with my older sister Caitlin in Quebec and we'd get to take in each other's sports while I was there. Both of us were having strong seasons and looking to impress team managements to potentially earn call-ups for next season, and while these trips wouldn't be as much of a possibility once Caitlin went to Calgary I was excited to eventually get to play at home.
The match against Montreal started out with a goal for the home side on a long-range touchdown pass that dropped in behind our defense to the striker, but we withstood the charge and went into halftime down by just the one goal. A few minutes into the second half, we got a rush started and Matt Turk ended up with the ball. I timed my jump just right as Turk threaded the ball between two defenders to me, a perfectly placed pass to blast the ball past the goalie and tie the match 1-1. It stayed tied for most of the second half until the 76th minute when Robbie Schuurmans got the ball off a corner and beat the goalie on the near side, then just two minutes later Schuurmans set up Tank Denstro in front of the net to make the score 3-1 and put the match to bed. We were able to close out the match with that score, and with AS Paris losing 2-1 to FC Kaapstad we were now only behind the division leaders on a tiebreaker. This and being able to see Caitlin's Quebec City Citadelles pull off an incredible victory with three goals in 48 seconds to turn a 3-1 deficit into a 4-3 victory were the perfect moments to mark this holiday visit, and I was treasuring every moment that I got to spend with my sister.
