In the penultimate gameday of the season, a resurgent AS Paris side came up against an Athenai F.C. team that has struggled to really make an impact on the league this season. Fresh off a big win in Seoul, the AS Paris locker room were continue to press on and finish out a promising season strongly, as they found themselves firmly in the mix for 3rd place in the league.
A quiet first half saw AS Paris dominate possession, but there were limited chances for either team as the crucial moment of quality was found lacking.
It ended up being a moment of good fortune, rather than quality, that ultimately broke the deadlock as a free kick from Eric Fish took a rather large deflection off the wall before sailing past the Athenai goalkeeper, stranded in the middle of his net.
Unfortunately, despite Paris kicking on from this stroke of luck, they were unable to convert any further chances and the two teams went into halftime at 1-0.
HT: AS Paris 1 - 0 Athenai F.C.
The upper hand remained with AS Paris early in the second half, dominating possession and creating chances left and right, but unable to convert once again. The game remained perched precariously for much of the second half, with Paris' 1 goal lead well deserved but far from secure.
The second breakthrough of the game came in the 71st minute, and it was again from a set piece, this time a corner. Lizard stepped up and whipped a ball dangerously into the box with the mighty Slab Head rising above all others to smash the ball home with his dense skull. A second headed goal off a corner on the season for the rookie centreback, who's aerial prowess is quickly becoming the stuff of legend across the league.
AS Paris found a bit more confidence on the ball with a 2 goal cushion, and started to move the ball with much more freedom. A neat combination of rookies saw Joe Mamba set up Hugh Jeplay just 5 minutes later who finished neatly past the Athenai keeper to put Les Bleus comfortably 3 goals ahead, and firmly in control of the 3 points.
FT: AS Paris 3 - 0 Athenai F.C.
A comfortable 3 points and a clean sheet for Les Bleus, with rookie centreback Slab Head collecting his first Player of the Match award of his young career.
