Joining the SSL academy league was a different experience than I am accustomed to in simulation sports league. Usually you are drafted straight away into a minor's league that has no affiliation with the major's teams. Your hand is usually held by a minor's GM in those cases, but in the SSL, the academy is much more of a trial by fire experience. After asking around, it is not necessarily this way by design, but the lack of academy GM candidates make it a necessity. I do think I could have used a little more help with things such as my early build path, but overall this did not impact my experience too much, as people outside of my academy team were very helpful if I asked any question.
My academy team was Jakarta. We were not a very good team this season, but I must say the team spirit was phenomenal. Players remained enthusiastic, optimistic, and avoided cynicism as best as they could despite being underdogs in nearly every game. I really appreciate them and what they added to my enjoyment of this season. Shoutout to @Dompatterson , @Summerstood , @TontoTut , and @fAeser to name some of my teammates that brought a good attitude and made the season fun.
With the season over and the draft presentation about to happen, I remain a bit nervous. Some of the teams reached out to scout me, but not all of them, which was kind of disappointing. I think being scouted, especially for the first time in a league, is one of the most exciting parts of being in a sim league. It makes the process feel real and impactful, and you get to start making connections with some important people in the league. All of my scouting conversations went well, although I'll admit some were more fruitful than others. My conversation with @Puppy really stood out and was a great example of how to scout well (AKA getting to know the person a bit, not just the user). I hope one of the teams that scouted me drafts me, otherwise it'll feel weird that a team decided to pick me without knowing me at all. Regardless, Sunday will be a fun day and I can't wait to see what happens.
