Hello there,
This topic isn't one that came out of nowhere, on a previous post made by TontoTuT, they did a great analysis of Midfielders we currently have in the League. Throughout their post, they had so much criteria to evaluate each individual listed and it got me thinking; what is the most hard role to occupied ? I mentioned already on the said post a bit of my opinion but I want to expand on the matter, in which, this article is going to stand for. First thing first, quick disclaimer that if I even offend someone while comparing both roles, I am sorry it is not my attention. With that out of the way here goes !
For those who wouldn't be aware of the stigma with Goalkeepers in football, but it is regarded as the hardest role on the pitch, why that ? The answer is simple, which I don't agree with in a sense of self belief because as I was younger, I played Goalkeeper and felt the heaviness of the task. The reason why people in football and even some players are saying that is because being a Goalkeeper transform you into a hero as fast as it can transform you into a villain, antagonizing the player because they let the opponent scored. We aren't that harsh with let's say defenders who can't stop the opponent, we don't say that to midfielders who aren't able to make good passes and we for sure aren't that harsh with striker who can't score. Well not immediately. Let's also not forget the fact that goalkeeper are more rare on teams. Last thing to add, they are also undervalued compare to other role (Ballon D'or).
Midfielders are a bit the contrary to the goalkeeper; there is a lot of prospect for the positions, public are less harsh on them, more exposure overall and most importantly... the player is required to "almost" be a god on the field. Good at passing, good physical abilities, good shooting because you might be in positions to score, good defensive performances, etc. Midfielders are, in my opinions, the other face of the medal with Goalkeepers. A glorified roles with by times too much on their plate vs a undervalued role that it is expected to always perform at 120%.
For some, all this might not be news since we're in Football forum and league, but we can't ignored the reality of the sport we all love. Like MBappe would say "Football as changed".
What y'all think about this ? Is my opinion a hot take or it is more realistic than we think ? I'd be happy to discuss it with others here or on the discord.
See ya !
