You know what, I’ll say it, and I will not say it with any negativity in my brain, or hopefully in my presentation, but what is up with the Grading Scale?
By no means am I, or many of us, a 5/5 writer. I would imagine that it would be much easier to blow someone away with Graphics, or even a Podcast than it would be with words. Maybe a really strong statistical Article could make the cut, but 5/5 isn’t really something I’m aiming to achieve this early in my time here.
I would imagine that some of my better ideas, and some of the average user’s better ideas, would be able to come to a 4/5. Sometimes you just have a piece that clicks, maybe a third of the time. A couple extra hundreds of thousands of dollars as a nice reward for your work.
I would expect however, that given the scale as I read it here today, that the majority of the rest of the work in the league would hover around the 3/5 scale. Clear, grammatically sound, logically structured. Is effective in its presentation, but isn’t particularly deep or compelling. Maybe a couple touch-ups here and there would do it some good. Sounds like the average sim league Article to me.
But it seems like most of the work in recent times at least has come out as a 2/5. This grade includes things like noticeable issues tagging along with some effort. Frequent errors in flow, consistency, or clarity. An attempted, but inconsistent structure. Minimal development of ideas.
That sounds worse than what I would expect most people to write. Honestly, that description sounds to me like what a 1/5 should be. Riddled with errors, poorly put together, and doesn’t say much. Technically qualifies, but is only worth a couple of dollars.
My answer is I’ll keep pumping out Articles, and this so far will be my longest. I knew I was taking a spray and pray approach. I’ve gotten a couple of things graded so far, and maybe my work will improve with time and immersion into the league. I was shooting for 3, and came one short one of the times, and again, that’s fine. But I went to go try to find a 4, or a 5 to maybe steal some pointers from, and I expected it to take 3-5 clicks, but it took many more than that, and really, I didn’t gain a lot.
I’m not necessarily feeling like shooting for quality over quantity is going to pay me out much better in the end, and I guess that’s a little disappointing. I feel like a fish that doesn’t bother going after the big shiny lure, because it has the same old worm as the plain hook does.
