Path to Mediocrity
#1
So as I’m lurking in the SSL Discord, as I tend to do, I come across an interesting message that sparks at least 200 words worth of thoughts in my brain. The message, in essence is congratulating Sky Scraper for reaching 100 Current Ability, which marks roughly the average soccer player’s ability. This is interesting to me, because Sky Scraper is one of my fellow S23 Draftees, and has a small amount, but a decent percentage less TPE than me. So as I look through the attributes of Sky Scraper, I’m hoping to learn a bit more about what FM24 defines as valuable, relative to its Current Ability metric.

The first things I notice, is a focus on the running attributes, primarily Acceleration and Pace. But I also know, having done a Deep Dive on Weston McNuggie, that those two attributes alone, at those values, would not be enough to make that kind of a difference, as McNuggie is much higher, especially assuming a rough bell curve.

Other notable attributes include Decisions, Positioning, Heading, and Marking. Then there’s a couple close ones in Jumping Reach, Anticipation, Composure, and Tackling. Now, I would imagine that Player Positions would play a major factor in a Current Ability Formula, and being a tried and true Defender, Central with Left and Right Secondaries, that being able to nail down the precise attributes needed to be an above-average Defender would be easier to concentrate on than perhaps my more dynamic DM, CD, AM mix. Being good at “being in the Center of the field” is much broader than “being at the back of the line”, and allows for one to be classified as better, sooner.

Congratulations to Sky Scraper at their accomplishment of achieving mediocrity, and I hope to follow in your footsteps soon, and beyond!
