The transfer window before this season started was chaos for Predrag. He was finally leaving Montreal after 3 seasons and heading for a new position as an Assistant Manager at another club. For a while there, it wasn't even clear which club that would be. The contenders were Sao Paulo, quite possibly the best team in the SSL at the time, and Romana, quite possibly the worst team in the SSL at the time. In the end, SfV would deem Romana's offer to be better.
This was already talked about enough and most of the senior managers and players were aware of this trade and what it might do for Romana. Nearly all of them were wrong. We find ourselves after matchday 6 and the first Cup round. Romana is tied for 4th in the Major league while London is tied for 3rd in Minors league, both teams have gotten through the Cup qualifier round. Romana got a slightly easier draw on paper, the new Minor club CS Rova Mpanjaka, but they found themselves 2nd in the Minor league. London on the other hand had to play Montreal United, previous Minor champions and an established club with history.
Both games were comfortable clean performances. Romana showed their Majors quality with a 4-2 win over Rova and London pushed Montreal side with a clean 2-0. The come into the round of 16 with momentum, however it seems unlikely that both teams from the organization will go through. Romana got Xelajú Cósmico FC, a favorable draw considering they already beat them 4-0 at the start of the season. London on the other hand got Shanghai Dragons, most likely it will be the end of their Cup run but stranger things have happened.
In the leagues both teams have had surprising games. London managed to come back from 0-3 to beat Seoul 5-3 on the first matchday. Romana on the other hand beat CD Tenochtitlan with a comfortable 3-0 result who had just recently beaten the Major champions Sao Paulo 5-2. It was clear that both Romana and London were contenders for top 6. Predrag and the rest of the Romana/London staff had one goal for S23, get their teams into top 6 so that they would start in Division 1 when S24 came. Originally, they would have considered it a success if only one team made it, now both are looking possible. A massive turnaround considering Romana finished 10th last season in Majors while London was 12th in Minors. In addition, both Romana and London couldn't get past the first round of the Cup last time.
Considering most SSL pundits predicted Romana and London to be near the bottom of the table this season we have to ask ourselves, where are we? Nobody expected such a rise in form for the organization, not even their own staff. It is clear that the combination of a revamped training plan for the players, increased motivation, logical tactical selection and a bit of luck contributed to this meteoric rise. All we can do now is watch how this season ends.
