Draft Analysis: Patrick Zweig

Liffeyside

Liffeyside has managed to add yet another high-ceiling youngster among their ranks with their latest 1st round pick.

Patrick Zweig was a slightly late addition in the Stockholm roster but wasted no time in making an impact. He played a major role in Stockholm almost doubling their points total from S22 and going from dead last to a respectable 4th place finish.

Let's do a deep dive into Zweig's rise to being a 1st round pick and how his future at Liffeyside could look like.

The Positives:
Skilful
Attacking Maestro
IQ
High Ceiling
Adaptability

Zweig in just 11 games, had 9 goal contributions and had 3 POTM. His G/A per minute ratio was among the very best in the entire academy. From the jump he was just an anomaly on the attacking side of the game, it isn't just his skills but his IQ which makes him stand out. Among the top 10 goal scorers, he was caught offside the least, almost 1/10th of what the top goalscorer Scat Cat was.

There’s also just not many ways to stop him; his dribbling is top notch and if in trouble, his vision and playmaking skills come into play so it wasn't surprising to see defenders resort to fouling him, He was among the most fouled players with 12.

Even Defensively, He has shown glimpses of someone who can track back, make hustle plays and not be afraid to tackle. He had 20 tackles on a 86% tackle success rate.

Stockholm also made several tactical changes throughout the season, We saw Patrick play at ST, RAM and then eventually his natural position at CAM, that type of adaptability is something coaches at the very top yearn for.

Liffeyside are an expansion team, and have a very young core which’ll perfectly suit Zweig, not only that but they don't have a X-factor which he can be. Someone who can control the midfield but also practically be your second striker. Celtics have absolutely gambled on his high ceiling, because if he reaches his potential, this is an MVP caliber player.

The Negatives:
Playmaking
Lack of Weapons
Work Rate

While we have hurled Zweig with praises so far, we must note that he is extremely raw. If Zweig wants to be the anchor of Celtic’s offense, he needs to work on making the right pass. Yes his pass% of 86 looks great on paper but those barely converted into real opportunities. With only 16 key passes, his playmaking often felt passive, and not something defences would lose their sleep over.

A true CAM needs to excite, he needs to be at the center of every trick the team plays, and so far Zweig has yet to show that consistently.

Whenever he drifts to the wings, he is just unable to create from wider areas, his awful 2/27, a cross success% of 7, Yes 7, will be a huge concern which’ll need to be addressed this upcoming year.

To add to my “needs to excite point” I really hope the Celtics coaching staff works on adding headers to his arsenal. A player who can jump high and get on the end of crosses and set pieces will always be a danger to the opposition. We’ve seen some glimpses of Zwieg being able to do that, in fact he even scored once with his head, but these are still glimpses. The fact is, he has missed almost 3x the headers he has not.

And the age old question asked to any attacking player, can you keep up for 90 minutes? Be able to not be a threat on offense but also be willing to run back and forth? track your man? make those tackles? be a leader?

Some big questions to answer. I personally see it as a very pivotal point for the Celtics because if this works out they have a potential superstar and dynasty in their hands but this could very well be a disaster too.

Only time will tell whether the Celtics have made the right call or not.
