After the thrill of winning the Division 2 majors championship and getting promoted back to the top-flight division, we had our sights set on success. The last time we reached the top division, we were relegated in a heartbreaking penalty shootout, but last season we'd performed excellently all year and won the top division, earning a promotion in the process. Our season would begin with a match against Hollywood FC, who were always a powerhouse team and would pose a huge challenge for us.
When the match began, Hollywood were controlling the pace of play as expected, getting several corner opportunities that our keeper was able to turn away. In the 28th minute, a Hollywood winger played the ball into the box to set up a header that beat the outstretched arms of our goalie for the first goal of the match. Liffeyside pushed hard throughout the rest of the first half to try and get the equalizer, but we couldn't manage to get anything through to the goal. A few minutes into the second half, Hollywood managed to get the ball back towards the net and fired a shot past our goalie to double the lead.
In the 58th minute, Leandro Dybala got a nice through ball up to me and I managed to get behind the defenders, launching a nice shot on goal that the Hollywood goalie managed to block. The rebound bounced right back to me and I tried to kick it to the front of the goal, but it was cleared away. I wouldn't have to wait long to get my next chance, though. Kaspars Kalinins sent a high pass over the top of the defense that Miedema was about to get a foot on, but the goalie ran out and tried to make a slide tackle on Miedema to knock the ball away. While he succeeded in that regard, the ball squirted out straight to land right on my foot, letting me simply kick the ball into the empty net for the easiest goal of my life to cut the lead to one goal. Liffeyside ultimately weren't able to add another goal and the match ended with the 2-1 final score, but I was happy to have gotten off to such a good start to the season.
