Dawn of the Morgenstern - who is Valentin Morgenstern?

STOCKHOLM (AP) -- Out of Graz, Austria, Valentin Morgenstern is a young centerback currently making a name for himself in the Academy with Stockholm IK. The Austrian native may not be a household name just yet, but he is quietly establishing himself as one of the nation's most dependable defensive talents.

While Morgenstern may not currently possess the talents that allow him to keep the game tidy and under control entirely, his willingness to take risks is truly what sets him apart from other defenders at his level. In the modern world, with its appreciation for flair and flashy plays, Valentin fits right in. He's unafraid to make the play that melts both creativity and reliability together.

Morgenstern's game is all about calculated risk. When it comes to building a play from the far end of the field, he's not the kind of guy to settle for the safe, expected pass. From what we've seen on the pitch with him, he is more likely than not to try and fire a daring through ball up the field in the hopes that a teammate can take it and make a break for the opposite end's goal. This unpredictability, his inherent risk-taking ability -- it's what makes him so effective at what he does. It makes him such a unique presence at the heart of Stockholm IK's defense.

Similarly, he is just as unpredictable when it comes to stopping the ball from moving towards his team's end. When asked about his playstyle, he told us, "It's not about waiting for the ball to come to [him]," and this certainly shows when you watch him manage his side of the pitch. Morgenstern doesn't let the enemy team develop their play, he takes matters into his own hands. Morgenstern takes tackles that are high in risk but just as equally high in reward.  He's not afraid to step up and scare the opponent with his aggressiveness; it's why he's so effective at disrupting attacks before they have the chance to even start.

While his risky play leaves him occasionally exposed, it's what brings an exciting edge to his game that keeps his fans so engaged in watching the young Austrian. He may not be the most polished defender, and again his high-risk approach certainly isn't without its flaws, but these are exactly what make him a unique and valuable asset.

If a team can take Morgenstern, refine his rough edges, and channel his risky personality wisely, he is sure to be something different from the rest of the world's defenders. He is an unpredictable force who offers something entirely different from the traditional center--and could ultimately be a key piece in a team's, and the Alpine Federation's, success.
