What’s Next for Freddy Adu
#1
The Beginning

Going into his Academy season with Adowa, Adu was advertised as a fantastic passer with a knack for creating great chances out of nothing. This season, however, we didn’t see as much of that as we had hoped. With the way that Adowa’s roster was structured, most of the buildup came from the wings and the idea was to feed crosses into the box for their target men, who had a large size advantage over most of their opponents. While this worked decently for a good portion of the season, it forced Freddy to play a role he wasn’t used to as much.

Instead of being the player always on the ball looking to make things happen, Adu became the player making runs to receive passes from other playmakers on the team. Though it took a few matches to get used to this, it became a role that Freddy thrived in. He would finish the season with 10 goals on 11 shots shots on target, the most on his team and 3rd most overall. A lot of these came from putting himself in the right place at the right time, using his game sense to get behind the defenders on balls played in from the wing. The pinnacle of his season was a 4 goal, 1 assist performance against Sydney City where he finished with a perfect 10.0 rating. All in all, it a season of learning for Adu and he hopes that he can bring some lessons he learned into the minor leagues.

Draft Day

Now that the season had finished, Adu was ready to be drafted into the big leagues. Though the season didn’t go exactly as he had hoped, pundits predicted he would be sought after by many teams in the first round and wouldn’t be waiting long to hear his name. Unfortunately, the wait for the call went on a little longer than he had expected. Finally, with the 25th pick, Adu’s name was called by Hollywood. Some players may have been disappointed to get passed over so many times, but Freddy chooses to use it as motivation. Not only does it give him some personal bulletin board material, but he also got drafted into a terrific organization. The mistake of all the other clubs to pass on him will only hurt them, not him.

The Future

Looking ahead, Adu will try to be a complimentary piece for F.C. Kaapstad, who finished just shy of winning the league last season. With so many great players already there, he will likely go back to his pass first mentality that got him discovered in the first place. The sky is the limit for him, and I can’t wait to see how he performs this season. With a contract already signed and a rapport forming with the players around him, there is no telling what things will be accomplished.
