As of writing this, the Minor League is now three matches in to Season 23 and we're starting to get a feel for how the rookies are performing and being used for their respective teams. In the Season 23 draft, Hollywood adding three new players to their organization:
While the star of the class is undoubtedly Lucas Peioxoto, FC Kaapstad has high hopes for the rest of the class as well and think they can all be solid contributors for the club. Here's how they've all performed thus far:
Lucas Peioxoto (LD)
1 POTM, 1 Goal, 8 Chances Created
The 6th overall pick is the lone rookie in the class to have played every minute for the club so far, and he's certainly delivered with those minutes so far. Not only has he played every minute, but he's also being asked to travel more distance on the pitch than anyone else on the club. In the first two matches, he played strong fundamentally but didn't pop off the stat sheet. In the third match, that all changed. In FC Kaapstad's 7-0 victory over Athenai FC, Peioxoto was named Player of the Match with a perfect 10.0 rating, a goal scored, and an absurd 7 (!!) chances created. His first career goal will likely be the highlight he looks back on, but the dominant performance of the offense had a lot to do with him setting up the rest of his teammates. Now that the monkey is off his back, I expect to see great things moving forward for this superstar in the making.
Freddy Adu (CAM)
1 Goal, 2 Chances Created
The 25th overall pick quickly jumped into action as well, though has been subbed off at halftime in each of their three games so far. Despite that, Adu is doing the best to make the most of his minutes and give the club everything he's got. It was a fairly uneventful first match, as Adu had a couple chances but was unable to finish any and watched his club lose a heartbreaker from the sideline. In the second match, he was involved in another couple chances and created one himself but again left without being involved in a goal in a 3-3 draw. In the third match, much like Lucas, Freddy finally was able to get himself on the score sheet. He scored the opening goal 9 minutes into the match and generated another chance for his team before being subbed out at halftime with a 5-0 lead. He ended with a 7.8 rating and his first career goal in the minor leagues. Pundits are starting to wonder how long he'll be subbed off and think he may have earned more minutes moving forward.
Bad Wolf (CDM)
1 Goal
Last but not least is FC Kaapstad's newest CDM Bad Wolf. Unlike Adu, Wolf is being used in the second half of a games as a substitute. They had a mostly quiet start to the season, but were able to score their first career goal in their 3rd game against Athenai FC to go along with a 7.8 rating. You may be seeing a trend here, but it looks like the Kaapstad rookies are all breaking out at the same time and it's exciting to see how they improve for the rest of the season.
I was planning on writing this anyway, but I thought it was pretty cool that all the rookies on the team were able to score their first career goal in the same match. Here's to many more of those for all three of them!
