Academy Task 5: Port Royal - The Story So Far...
#1
Well, 3 games in to the Academy season, I think this is as good a time as any to discuss the season so far, our season going forward, and some personal perspective of Reece Munro’s performances. Let’s start with a bit of background on Port Royal as a team and how they’ve performed in the past.

Port Royal FC
Originating from Kingston, Jamaica, they had quite the introduction to the academy! In their first season (as far back as the records show), they would actually go on to win the league with 9 wins and 27 points, seeing them beat out joint 2nd/3rd place, who both finished on 25 points apiece. With the momentum on the up for them, they would follow that amazing season by doing even better and once again lifting the league trophy with 30 points and a very impressive goal difference of 26.

Sadly, this would, however, be the last time they would win the league as they followed this up with a few up and down seasons, finishing 5th and 2nd in their respective seasons. Would season 26 see them return to winning ways?

The Season So Far…
Starting the season extremely strongly, they would see off their opposition 4-2 as they brushed Sydney City aside convincingly. There would be standout performances from Barry McGlynn, Reece Munro, and Sadie Black. Ending the game with 51% possession, 4.07 xG and 19 shots throughout the game, they really set their tone for the season and showed all the teams in the league they meant business this season and would be an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Unfortunately, they would not follow this up with another win and instead got overconfident in their approach to their 2nd game, which would come against league favourites Stockholm IK. With some outstanding performances from the Swedes, they would dismantle the confidence and morale of the men in green and black as they crashed back to the reality of academy football. Despite the occasional good spell from Port Royal and a fantastic performance between the sticks by Moew Enbach, there really wasn’t much to shout home about for the Royals as they simply could not keep up with Stockholm and really shown a fragile mentality after losing a 2nd goal as they would completely fall out of the game and ultimately conceding a 3rd in the 78th minute by one of the stand outs in the entire league, Dennis Van Huntelrooy.

Hoping to bounce back from this setback, they would set their sights on Atletico Medellin, hoping to right their wrongs from the previous game and get back to their ever-impressive attacking football whilst shoring up the defence. By the end of the game, they would continue making a plethora of chances with a total of 20 and an xG of 1.91… however, the main stat that mattered in the end was not one that would please anyone affiliated with the Royals, and the game finished 3-0. Hammering home the point that if you’re toothless in front of goal, you will be punished in this league, and sadly, that is exactly what happened throughout the 90 mins. Just making the chances isn’t nearly good enough when you want to show some mettle and show the other teams that you’re not just here to participate.

The Season Going Forward…
Going forward, I think there has to be some introspection throughout the entirety of the locker room; there is no one man to blame amongst the squad and certainly not the manager. The group of players that enter that park need to go out willing to show what they’re made of and be ready to prove a point. There needs to be a mentality shift; things are earned in the academy, not given. You have to scratch and claw your way through to show who you are as a player, but also who you are as a person if you want to stand a chance of being drafted to the minors or majors.

Next up for the Royals is Adowa Accra FC, who are coming off the back of a massive 5-1 victory, so will be full of confidence to continue the trend they’re setting. However, as said already mentioned above, confidence is a double-edged sword in this league, and they will need to see that they don’t get complacent. It will be up to Port Royal to cause an early-season upset and get their own season back on track, but to do so, they better hope they replace their shooting boots with their scoring boots and look to convert the chances they have been creating.

After that, they will then take on a Victoria Falls team that had a rough start but has managed to turn it around and get their first win of the season, so they will no doubt be viewing it now as the start of their season to really kick on and finish it strong.

Ultimately, the main thing Port Royal needs to focus on is conversion. Making the chances hasn’t been any problem, and even in the games that were severely disappointing in matchday 2 and 3, they were still creating an abundance of chances, but it’s just getting it in the back of the net that's been the main challenge. Can they do it?

Reece Munro So Far
Munro started very well out of the gates and really showed in that first game what he is capable of in terms of not only his defensive ability but also his playmaking and attacking play, even doing well enough to be getting mentions in a variety of scouting reports and players to look at in the future. As he continued, he certainly didn’t shy away from the hard work and putting himself about the park with an impressive 44.3km travelled, making him have the highest distance travelled across the entire league, adding to that he has 1 goal and 1 assist to his name with an average rating of 7.17.

In Conclusion, he needs to keep up the good work, keep the work rate high and show himself to be more than willing to be the workhorse of the midfield whilst also displaying, if not the finished product, then the potential of his playmaking ability and live up to his name of The Midfield Controller!
