Fever Pitch by Nick Hornby
The final matchday of the Academy league season was the kind of unpredictable and heart-stopping drama that you can’t script. We couldn't win the title ourselves, sitting in 4th place, but we held the entire league's fate in our hands. By facing Victoria Falls on the last matchday, we were the gatekeepers. If we won, we handed the trophy to PS Jakarta. We went out and won a ridiculous 6-5 thriller, and I managed to score four of our goals. While the dust was settling on the pitch, I thought about the time I was a wee lad reading Fever Pitch by Nick Hornby.

Hornby’s book is a one of a kind classic about football obsession. He tracks his entire life through the matches of Arsenal, explaining how the ups and downs of his club dictated his relationships, his mood, and his sanity. There’s a line in the book where he talks about how football fans are addicted to the hope and the sheer unpredictability of the game. He writes about that desperate need to be part of a moment that matters.

On the final matchday, we lived that exact obsession. A 6-5 scoreline isn't something you will forget anytime soon. Whenever I think back to that day it's still pure, raw emotion. Every time Victoria Falls scored, the title swung back to them. Every time we answered, it went back to Jakarta. Walking away with four goals in a match like that felt incredible, but the best part was feeling the absolute weight of the game. For 90 minutes, the eyes of the entire league were on Accra. We didn't lift the trophy ourselves, but we created the moment that defined the season.

Hornby writes that football gives you moments where you feel completely alive, completely consumed by the theater and spectacle of the pitch. That’s how it felt when the final whistle blew.

This match was also my final dance in the Academy. I’ve just been drafted as a striker for C.D. Tenochtitlan. Looking back at how this season started, ending it as the kingmaker with a four-goal performance is a beautiful reminder of why we love this game. I was struggling for form, running miles into empty channels, and letting the online noise get to me. However, as Hornby says, the obsession is worth it.

I’m packing my bags for Tenochtitlan now. The Academy story is closed, and a new chapter begins.

Rating: 5/5 Next Week: Reporting from Mexico.
In the sunset of dissolution, everything is illuminated by the aura of nostalgia, even the guillotine.
