There is a storied tradition in sports to track the mystical MacGuffin trophy. More transient than an actual championship and more engaging than any normal game, the MacGuffin trophy is a highly prized hot potato that, by definition, has existed since the beginning of any sport league. For those who aren't aware, the idea of the MacGuffin trophy is essentially what a wrestling title belt is. At some point, someone is awarded the trophy to start with. In this case, that someone will be the winner of the first ever SSL game, Inter London. From then on, every time that team plays a game, the MacGuffin trophy is on the line. If they win, they get to keep it. If they lose, the trophy goes to whoever they lost to. There has always been a MacGuffin title holder since the very first game in the SSL. There will always be a MacGuffin title holder for as long as the SSL exists.
And I'm going to use it to track which team is the best all time.
The premise is simple. Every time a team starts a game while holding the MacGuffin trophy, they will gain a point. I will keep track of points gained each season, add them to the all time points at the end of each season, and use that to track definitively which team is truly the best of all time. Which team will prove to be the MacGuffin champions of the SSL? Stay tuned!
