Prospect Profile: Maxi González
#1
At 16, Maxi González was one of the top prospects in Uruguay. He was a dynamic forward who could play across the front line. Despite his smaller stature and slight frame, he would charge at defenders with the pace and power of a rhino. Scouts and coaches alike had warned that his lack of decision-making and general understanding of the game would cost him at the higher levels. Despite those concerns, he blew past every player in his age group, both literally and figuratively, as he rose through the youth teams at Club Atlético Peñarol, his local club and one of Uruguay's biggest.

He would make 4 promising sub appearances in that season, failing to score or assist but showing the kind of skill and flair that made fans excited with the promise of years of entertaining football. "¡Tiene el mundo a sus pies!" (He has the world at his feet) read the first page of the sports section in El País, Montevideo's largest newspaper.

Gonzalez was already attracting interest from European clubs when he went to Singapore for the U-20 World Cup. With every scout in the world watching, González tore both his ACL and MCL in a match against Turkey.

The injury was devastating, as it took over 9 months for him to start playing competitive football again. In a recent interview, González explained not only the physical but also the mental effects of the injury. "I was depressed. Depressed. I locked myself in my room, I stopped talking to people. All I could do was watch football." Unfortunately for him, this would be the first in a long string of injuries, and González has never fully recovered the blazing speed and agility that had initially made him such a hot prospect. But it would not be the end of his career.

González spent his time in recovery watching film and studying the game. What many had pointed to as his biggest weakness had become his greatest strength, as he transformed his game. After being pushed back from the forward, González became an expert at reading and dissecting defenses. He would earn his place back in the youth team as coaches began to see him as a player who could be trusted to bring the ball out from the back without any strict instructions.

He get a chance in the first team due to a sudden injury crisis, but he would soon make it his home. Fans were pleasantly surprised as their formerly pacy striker was now breaking into the team as a full-back. He would quickly establish himself as a regular starter, as he was ideal for the manager's high pressing and possession-based tactic. Peñarol would win the league title the following year, and González would win fans' player of the year.

After an impressive campaign last year, González has ambitiously decided to declare for the SSL draft. Many critics have pointed out that he remains technically underdeveloped and physically lackluster, but his proponents will argue that his intelligence and versatility will allow him to compete with the best in the game. Will he flounder against such stiff competition? Or will Maxi of Montevideo prove that he has the world at his feet once again?
