Budget Busquets: Hello everyone and welcome to The Breakdown with Budget Busquets and Buddies. Today, we're gonna be visited by British centreback Jack Coleman. Coleman is an S5 prospect and has declared for the upcoming draft. Excited to have you here today Jack!
Jack Coleman @dylan: Thank you. It's great to be here.
B: So Jack, tell us a bit about yourself.
J: I'm really excited to be joining the league. Ever since my brother became a professional athlete, I've been looking to do the same. I don't have much football experience but my sporting background should definitely make it easy to adjust.
B: Who's your brother? What's your sporting background?
J: My brother has requested that I don't tell anyone who he is due to security concerns but I can say that he is currently captaining a lower-level sports team in the United States. My own sports background is primarily in hockey where I have played internationally for my country as a junior. I also have experience in rugby and cricket. I have, of course, played football before but not at the same level.
B: How do you think your experiences in these sports have influenced your style of play as a footballer? And what would you describe your style of play?
J: I think my experiences have definitely helped with my play. As a defender, the basic defence strategies can be applied from one sport to another. The only difficulties are learning the fine points of each sport, like how to handle the ball. My style is very much defence first. There are other people on the team whose job it is to score.
B: With your experiences in hockey and rugby, are we gonna expect more of a classic no-nonsense centreback with crunching tackles than maybe the modern technical ball-playing centreback?
J: That is absolutely what you should expect. Since I have less experience at playing with the ball, it makes no sense to focus on the technical aspects. I will just go the classic method to get that ball away.
B: Being an English lad do you relish the chance you play for Inter London FC or are you looking to go abroad and spread your wings?
J: Whilst it would be great to play for what is essentially my local team, that also comes with drawbacks like living within driving reach of your parents. I am open to playing for any team and I am sure that I can find myself at home anywhere in the world.
B: Do you see your brother joining you in the SSL in the future?
J: My older brother (the one mentioned before) is having the time of his life playing where he is now. His time in that league is definitely running out but I think he may just focus on the businesses he has set up in the area instead of playing for another team elsewhere. I'm not sure there is anywhere else he would enjoy spending that much time due to his 'hobbies'. My younger brother may join in the future but I told him he's not allowed to join while I am here.
B: Why are you essentially banning your brother from joining the SSL? What if by the time you retire he's already missed out on some prime sporting years? I can't imagine I would be happy if I had a brother try and do that to me.
J: As my older brother taught me, it is an older brother's job to tell their younger brother what to do. I don't want him showing up here and embarrassing me. He can go and do something else while he's waiting and if he misses his prime sporting years he doesn't have to come at all. Maybe he doesn't even want to play football. He's never said that he does to me.
B: Well hopefully for your sake, you don't embarrass yourself out there then I guess. As an athlete, I'm not sure I agree with your hindering your brother's career for your own pride. What is your goal entering into this league, both short-term in your first season and long-term goals you want to hit when you hang up your boots?
J: In the short-term, I want to get on a team and get to know them and find a place for myself on the team. I think everyone's long-term goal is to win it all but at the end of my career I'd like to be able to look back and say I did the best I could do and be happy with what I've achieved.
B: A lot of the greatest one-club players have been centrebacks. Do you see yourself as playing for one club your whole career and being a club legend? Or do you see yourself as more of a journeyman enjoying all the finest cities the SSL has to offer?
J: I can see myself playing for one club my whole career if things work out with the team that drafts me. I have no interest in continuously having to pick up and move to another country. I've watched my brother move back and forth between countries and it just seems like hard work.
B: Yeah, moving can be tough for athletes especially if you have family. You don't want to keep constantly uprooting your kids all the time. As a defender, is there anyone in the SSL you admire? Reversely, is there a striker or attacker you're scared/excited to come up against?
J: There's not really anyone I admire. It's best to just focus on your own career or you can end up setting expectations that you will never reach. As for the reverse? I don't see any point worrying about them because once you're on the pitch they're all just the opposition. You just have to be better than them. Saying that though, there is one person who I would love to meet. Shion Okamoto, if you're reading this interview, I'd love for you to come to my house for dinner sometime.
B: Shion Okamoto is my teammate, so I'm sure I can connect you two together. Before we go, is there anything else you'd like to say to the audience?
J: Yeah. I just want to say to all the teams that pick someone ahead of me in the draft, my brother knows people and he will send them after you, so think carefully when you're drafting.
