We're getting overrun in the midfield.

No power point this week. They're great but I have a headache so we're going to just spit some text out.

The next thing I want to do is to explain the midfield. I think a lot of "breaking the triangle" was about attackers. In the modern world of the pep double pivot the midfield has fallen away to be simply an enabler of various attacking movements. However much of the modern game is based on the duality of pressing and possession. Pep wanted to break the wheel and was forced to leave the land of the Barcids to do so. The Catalonians in those times (and the Catalonians in our league) believed in the very simple geometric philosophy that having one more midfielder than the other team meant that you could pass the ball freely as much as you wanted.

The problem with every possession system is that at some point you need to score goals. You may have 80% possession but with a competent pressing system, a good zonal marking system, and the type of money you get from being the pet club of your nations dictator that wants to use it to oppress anyone who defies your cultural ambitions, you can make your chances more numerous and much simpler to take. On the opposite, you can get fresh players in at any point to keep up with the incessant passing.

Anyway an inside joke from older FM players. Back in the day the assistant manager used to give advice on what was happening. Most players at some point would want to play wide due to the derth of possession systems pre-klopian gengen pressing. We would find success and fun times with this but this guy would constantly complain about our midfield being overrun. The thing that made this funny for us however is that we knew that it wasn't the case, the midfield for us was much larger than the center circle it seemed the game thought it was.

Over the next few weeks I'm going to plug in what parts of the attackers influence the midfield race, what parts of the midfield work to create chances, and what parts of the defense need to be "shielded" by the midfield. What does it mean to "run" and what does it mean to "sit" Why is DLP-S BBM-S the default? Why is CM-A being seen as an improvement over the BBM? Why is the ball-winner midfielder the best role but also impossible to fit into most tactical systems?

I'll also talk about attacking midfielders. That'll be a podcast. Oh god, it'll go on for hours and hours and hours. I'll talk about the difference between Argentinian and Brazilian and African and Italian and Asian and German attacking center midfielders. It'll dip into some quasi-political talk but I sware it'll never get past the surface-level philosophical observations that have influenced the cultures that it existed in.

Remember to put your goalie on sweeper keeper- defend and do not ask questions.

I would be interested in why you think the ball winning mid is the best role when ironically, it's one of my least favourite (even when I want a BWM I usually just play them in another role with PI which we unfortunately cannot do anyways). Also, I've been playing around with IWBs this season, so my midfielders can more freely attack (except Busquets he's shit at attacking). great analysis as always though, I just finished Zonal Marking by Michael Cox, so it's been inspiring some of my tactical experimentation.

I think BWM is the best role but also its impossible to use "properly" due to it inherently being a defensive role that breaks the defensive shape of the team.

Its a pressing role in a game that values pressing the most atm. There aren't any other Destroyer roles in the game that summons the same kind of aggression.

Thanks though for the complement though. this really is just what I think about day to day when I'm trying to relax.

This is honestly the best way to sum up the BWM in fm.
