Hey, Jude #7: Greer by the Numbers
#1
CAIRO, Egypt -- As Nashville native Jude Greer approaches the halfway mark of the Simulation Soccer League Minor League season with Cairo City FC, his stat line paints an interesting picture of his contributions to his team thus far.

Over eight appearances* in all competitions, Greer has registered an average match rating of just 6.49. However, statistical experts are quick to point out that the match rating algorithm used by the SSL puts defenders at a disadvantage compared to forwards and midfielders, meaning the low rating should not be taken on its own as an indicator of poor performance. Perhaps more telling is that Greer has run 109 km so far this season--or, for those using imperial units, nearly 68 miles. That’s approximately the distance from Nashville to the Jack Daniel’s distillery in Lynchburg.

In addition to a respectable 85.5% pass completion rate, Greer’s crossing has been quietly solid as well The left back has completed 11 of his 51 of his cross attempts, good for a cross completion rate of 21.57%. Though that figure looks quite low, Transfermarkt calculated in 2020 that the average cross completion rate of a player in the English Premier League was just 18.9%. While that figure is certainly outdated, it does seem to show that Greer has been putting in his fair share of effort.

The most important stat, though, is the number of mistakes Greer has committed that have led directly to goals: zero. While questions can be asked of his marking or tracking in certain instances, the statisticians have not directly found him at fault for any of Cairo’s 13 conceded goals thus far. In addition, he’s only been booked once all season.

The numbers don’t lie: while Greer has yet to really make his mark on the SSL, he’s certainly not hurting his team--no matter what the likes of Paul Merson may claim.

*All statistics in this article were current as of SSL Minor League Matchday 6 and SSL Cup Matchday 2.
