It’s been times of crisis for the Chilean National Team. Ever since winning their second Copa América back in 2016, the country has seen a huge decline in their footballing quality. With their golden generation getting older and leaving their prime, the team’s performances started to go from bad to worse. Managers came and left, all unable to return the team to its former glory. Amongst Chileans, the problem was evident: they needed a new generation of young, exciting and energetic players.
Sounds simple, right? You only need to produce young players. They’ve done it before, they can do it again. That’s what Chileans thought at first. But, as time passed, they realised their footballing culture wasn’t the same anymore. Young players would rather play for money than passion. Fans watched in desperation, as lots of promising talents ended up in the bench of some Mexican team fighting relegation.
As they saw their country’s state getting worse every day, kids wondered what happened to that great team who beat Messi’s Argentina in 2 finals, just a couple of years ago. And so, some of them decided to step up. Some talents started going to Denmark, Italy or Spain, as they looked to take their NT back to glory. Many of them are working hard to try and become great footballers, and though some have already shown good performances and even played for the National Team, the main attraction has been a rather original case.
BJ Munro, a young attacking midfielder from Santiago, the capital, thought the process of going to a traditional European league was too risky. So, he went with another option, one questioned by many pundits, players, managers and fans. He chose to try his luck in the revolutionary SSL, a new format of football never seen before. BJ believes that, by being one of the members of this concept, he can earn a reputation big enough to overtake his fellow Chilean youngsters and even some legends.
With his main aim being to, in his own words, “reach a level as high as the one of the GOAT: Alexis Sanchez”, fans are eager to see how the AM performs in such a special league. Everyone in Chile hopes he will indeed be their next “Goatlexis Sanchez”, and help their team to another trophy. It won’t be easy, but it will surely be incredibly interesting.
