São Paulo's Redemption
#1
It had been a long and difficult journey for São Paulo over the past two seasons. The club had fallen on hard times, finishing bottom of the league in 4 consecutive campaigns with an abysmal -91 goal differential in the previous season. The frustration and disappointment among the fans was palpable, as they watched their beloved team struggle to compete with even the worst teams in the SSL.

But on this night at the Estadio de São Paulo, everything changed.

The first half was a quiet affair, with both sides feeling each other out. A.C. Romana looked to unsettle the home team, while São Paulo struggled to create any real chances. The scoreline remained deadlocked at 0-0 as the teams headed to the dressing rooms at halftime.

The breakthrough came early in the second half, and it was the work of the first overall selection Julian Rubio. Receiving a pinpoint pass from teammate Nerve De Groot, Rubio was left with a simple tap-in to open the scoring. The fans erupted in a deafening roar. For the first time in what felt like forever, the fans experienced pure joy. The 52nd-minute goal was just the confidence boost São Paulo needed.

As Romana pushed forward in search of an equalizer, São Paulo started to find more space on the counter-attack. The veteran Vito Habjanic, coming off the bench to replace Justinussen, was a constant thorn in Romana's side with his movement and physical presence. His persistence paid off late in the game when his teammate Hashimoto was brought down in the box, earning his side a penalty. Habjanic stepped up and coolly converted the shot, doubling São Paulo's advantage.

The São Paulo defenders thwarted every Romana attack, fighting relentlessly until the final whistle. In the 94th minute, it finally came—the referee blew his whistle, signaling the end of the match. São Paulo had won. The roar that echoed around the stadium at the final whistle was one of pure relief and joy, years of heartbreak and disappointment melted away. The players embraced on the field, their faces beaming with pride. This was not just a win, it was a turning point for a team and its loyal supporters who had waited so long for a moment like this.

Isn't this something? Sao Paulo is WINNING games. And not just sporadically, but 2 wins, 1 draw, and only 1 loss so far in 4 games. Who saw this coming? I'll tell you who. Roque, Kahri, Jason, and all the crazy kids over on Sao Paulo / Paris. I'll be honest, I wasn't sure where I wanted Benecio to get drafted, but I know Sao Paulo was not high on the list. Not because they didn't have great users, but because it's been pretty miserable from what I can tell. I wasn't sure how the locker room would be, how demoralized I'd be with loss after loss. So I was mostly out on being drafted by USP.

But then the season started. Hype was building up in our locker room. We got new blood in and they've done a good job of getting recruits in to check things out (even though it's mostly ISFL'ers it feels like, haha). And we started WINNING games, can you believe that? Great locker rooms are made even better when you win, so it's been fun so far. Regardless as to how the rest of the season goes, I'm looking forward to this group of committed users and eventually winning the whole damn thing.
