GRADED: The Daily Mythic - MD8 Seoul Mythic at Montreal
#1
SEOUL MYTHIC AT MONTREAL - THE DAILY MYTHIC

Seoul Mythic took on league leaders Montreal in a fierce battle, with Seoul hoping for a surprise victory to help start up form for a top 3 finish.

PREVIOUS MATCHES

Seoul took on North Shore in MD7, taking a close 3-2 loss back home with Nikolai Ahmed and Kim Heung-Min on the scoresheet. Although the game didn't end in Seoul's favor, it was a decent showing and a sign of promise of better form. Montreal took on an away day at AS Paris, who at the time sat in 3rd, making it on paper seem like an intense showdown. The match ended 5-4 for Montreal, with Maggie Sinclair grabbing a brace, the sibling pair Dina and Aleksandr Skovgaard scoring a goal each, and an own goal from AS Paris forward Eric Belmont.

TABLE TIME

Before the match between Seoul and Montreal, Seoul sat in 5th with 9 points in 7 matches. With a win, Seoul could have potentially moved up to 4th, depending on how the North Shore match ended up. A draw or a loss could have kept Seoul in 5th or have them dropped all the way down to 7th, depending on if Inter London or Athenai won their match. Montreal would have stayed in 1st either way, an 8 point gap separating Kaapstad from 1st.

IN FORMS

Although coming off of a tight defeat to North Shore, there were some positives to look at. Nikolai Ahmed scored an early equalizer for Seoul with a first time strike into the top left corner from Bamford's cut back from right side of the box. Seoul will hope that Ahmed can be an influence in the midfield and as an offensive unit again for this match up. Kim Heung-Min would have been a valuable asset to Seoul, but was called up to the Catalunya squad. Twinkletoes was also a unit in the North Shore match, although conceding 3, saved 11 shots to prevent a 14-2 battering.

MATCH RECAP

The match started off with a Montreal corner, which bobbled in the box a few times before Varnson picked the ball up and passed it up for Panda. Panda proceeded to get tackled, picked the ball back up, passed it in the middle for Ahmed, who sent it up for Qartista. Qartista would lay it off for Zervas, who in a 1 on 1 situation with the keeper, sent it into the side netting somehow with the whole far post wide open for a goal.

The next notable highlight comes in the 38th minute, where Dina Skovgaard dribbles the ball all the way down the right flank, beating Stain to send a ball into the box where Bamford put in a challenge on Sinclair. The referee called for a penalty, which looked to be a push on the back, but the call was cleared by VAR.

Right after halftime in the 47th minute, Dina Skovgaard carried a ball down the right flank once again, which was poked away by Panda, a very soft challenge which the referee somehow awarded a penalty to. Away fans were absolutely enraged with the referee, giving the suggestion that the referee was against Seoul and desperately trying to make the side concede. VAR also disagreed with the center referee, and a penalty against Seoul was cleared for the 2nd time in the match.

There was more drama in the 50th minute when Varnson took the ball from the corner flag on the right flank and passed it to Zervas, where Montreal defensemen Clarke put in a tackle from behind. The referee called for another penalty, but the debate this time was whether it was in or outside the box. VAR took a check only 3 minutes after being called upon before, and this time a penalty was awarded for Seoul. Seoul penalty taker Bamford stepped up to give Seoul a lead against the league leaders, and a goal here would be huge. Bamford took the penalty with confidence, blasting it top right corner and off the bar. Although Seoul were celebrating in the corner, Montreal players were steaming with the referee, in total disagreement for the challenge that gave away a penalty.

In the 55th minute, a corner from Dina Skovgaard was cleared to the top of the box, where Montreal CB Szarekh attempted an overhead kick, which forced Twinkletoes to make a diving catch. Although it wasn't the best effort, overhead kicks aren't that common so it's just a fun highlight to add in here.

In the 66th minute, a poor ball from Twinkletoes gave Sukzuki a chance to equalize, with it just being him and Twinkletoes in a one on one. Sukzuki wasted the opportunity by shooting from the top of the box and hitting the ball wide, definitely annoying his teammates by missing the chance to get Montreal back into the game.

For the next 20 minutes, it was a huge defensive effort from Seoul, clearing every chance they could while Twinkletoes saved the rest. The match ended with a cleared corner by Montreal, and relief hit the Seoul players when the final whistle sounded, completing the upset which the defense and Twinkletoes had fought for so hard.

MYTHIC MOMENT

The Mythic Moment of the match for me was of course the penalty taken by Bamford. It wasn't just a normal penalty, it was a goal that led Seoul to an upset victory that could lift morale around the club and give some hope for the rest of the season. Although the call was debatable, Seoul will gladly take any penalty they recieve without complaint, and in this case this penalty has the potentialy to be a season turning moment for Seoul.

MY MOTM

My MOTM for the clash against Montreal was a tricky pick. I could have easily chosen Bamford who gave Seoul the lead and arguably won the game for them, but my MOTM was Twinkletoes. Twinkletoes didn't seem to have that huge of an impact, but he was really involved in the second half and was influential to not conceding any goals. Twinkletoes had 8 saves, which was enough to complete the clean sheet.

TABLE TIME

After MD8, Seoul sits in 5th with 12 points, 1 point under North Shore, 3 under AS Paris and 4 under Kaapstad. A potential problem for Seoul in the table will be their GD, having a -4 GD compared to North Shore's 5, and for the other teams it is only higher. If Seoul ends up sharing the same points with anyone above them, Seoul will have the disadvantage, and they will hopefully want to fix the GD situation before the final few matches. Looking below Seoul, there is a 5 point gap between them and Inter London and Athenai, while Cairo sit at the bottom with 1 point.

Montreal still sit in 1st, but Kaapstad's 1-0 win over Cairo City will close the gap for 1st by 5 points. Should Montreal be worried? With such a close loss for Seoul, it could be a sign of future trouble, but I doubt that this loss will change the outcome of the potential champions claiming their crown.

NEXT MATCH?

Seoul Mythic will take on Athenai at home for MD9, with hopes to comfortably beat them and climb the table. Athenai took on North Shore and drew 2-2, so it'll be an interesting match to look forward to. Montreal take on Cairo City away next up, which realistically should be an easy win, although Kaapstad only took a 1-0 victory over Cairo. Another match to look forward to, and I'm sure Kaapstad players are hoping for the Cairo upset next.
