A SSL Superfan's Dream Trip
#1
Many of the major sports have fans around the world. A few fortunate fans make it their goal to visit every stadium within a league. As a North American I see this often in Major League Baseball, National Football League or to a lesser extent in the National Hockey League. My perspective is obviously biased towards North American Sports. I’m not aware of the interest fans in Europe or other parts of the world have for this but I’m sure it exists. I’m guessing there are fans that travel to all the English Premier League stadiums or to other regional sporting events.

I wanted to see what it would cost to travel to all the stadiums in the Major, Minors and Academy league. I also wanted to see what was the most efficient way for me to get to all these places was. The SSL spans 20 countries across six continents. The travel will be extensive and the cost will be through the roof, but it will be worth it for the ultimate SSL fan. For a interactive map of all the Major and Minor locations, click here

I’m going to start this journey on an arbitrary day (August 1, 2025) and do my best to make the trip realistic. We will be using the shortest non-stop flights as much as possible and cheapest. Not every superfan is made of money! The flight times and costs are legit.

We all know Rapid Magyar SC have the best fans in the league. Therefore, the most likely starting spot for a SSL superfan will be in their home city, Budapest. So that’s where we’ll start this journey!

First stop - Rapid Magyar SC - Budapest, Hungary
This may not be the starting point many of you thought of but it isn’t the worst. It is fairly central and allows us to start in Europe. Europe has the highest concentration of SSL clubs with eight of the twenty clubs in Europe. This is the first minor club checked off the list.

Second Stop - A.C Romana - Rome, Italy - 1h40m flight - $52
This is the easy part of our journey. We’ll enjoy the short and cheap flights while we can. Making our way southwest out of Hungary on an early morning flight means we head to Italy to watch the team from Rome. Lucky for us, it’s an afternoon game so we can continue on in the evening to our next location. A.C. Romana is our first Major team checked off.

Third Stop - CF Catalunya - Barcelona, Spain - 1h 50m - $90
Continuing with our short and cheap flights we head west into Spain to watch CF Catalunya. Sticking within the same timezone makes this one fairly easy. Hitting our second major team before moving on.

Fourth Stop  - Schwarzwalder FV - Pforzheim, Germany - 2h - $128
We head to Germany on our fourth day. Pforzheim doesn’t have an airport so we fly into Stuttgart and take a car for 45 minutes to reach the city. Not exactly convenient when you’re trying to quickly travel across the world. Our third major team checked off.

Fifth stop  - AS Paris - Paris, France - 1h 30m - $266
Not going to lie, I was surprised to see the jump in ticket prices here. I feel like this was our first relatively big jump. Visiting Paris for the first time you have to see the Eiffel Tower…. That is if you aren’t a SSL superfan on a mission! We don’t have time for that! AS Paris is the fourth major team we’ve seen.

Sixth - Inter London - London, United Kingdom - 1h 10m - $100
As we leave mainland Europe for the first time we get to our second minor league team, Inter London. This also marks our first completion of an organization - A.C Romana and Inter London. After watching Inter London, our fan gets a little nervous. This is where the journey truly begins.

Seventh Stop - Reykjavik United - Reykjavik, Iceland - 3h 5m - $394
Not the cheapest flight available but the quickest. We’ve started to put some distance between us and our starting point. The Reykjavik team always put on a show. We’ve now seen five major teams.

Eighth Stop - Montreal United - Montreal, Canada - 5h 25m - $1,820
Ouch…. This one stings! Again, not the cheapest but definitely the flight that saves us the most time. For the first time in our trip, we are on a new continent. Our first stop in the Americas is in Montreal, Canada to watch Montreal United. Might as well grab some poutine while we’re here! The third minor team completed and the second organization - Schwarzwalder and Montreal.

Ninth Stop - Hollywood FC - Los Angeles, USA - 5h 50m - $371
Not bad at all considering we’re going across the continent. Visiting one of the original SSL teams is a great time. The sun is shining so we’re happy to mark off another major team. But we have to keep moving on. However, it’s decision time. At first, I thought I would head south and hit up Mexico, Brazil and Argentina. But after looking at the map, I think I’ll save those for later and head into Asian to complete that part of the trek.

Tenth Stop  - Tokyo SC - Tokyo, Japan - 11h 20m -  $354
Okay, full stop. WTF is that price! I can’t believe that. I can’t fly for that cheap in the same province (I live in Canada) let alone across the Ocean to a different continent. But sure enough, ZIPAIR Tokyo will fly you from LAX to Tokyo for #354. Insane! Anyway…… Our first steps in Asia are in Japan as we take in Tokyo SC.  A great team and another major team checked off the list.

Eleventh Stop - Seoul MFC - Seoul, South Korea - 2h 45m - $276
It’s nice to be back on relatively short flights. A hop and skip away is Seoul where we get to enjoy some minor soccer. We don’t stay long though as we head southwest into China. We’ve now competed three organizations as we knock off CF Catalunya and Seoul MFC.

Twelfth Stop - Shanghai Dragons - Shanghai, China - 2h 5m - $125
Our second favourite team! The sibling team to our hometown Rapids Magyar. The dragons are awesome and this is a stop we’ve been looking forward to since we started. Unfortunately, we can’t stay long to celebrate their win as we’ve got places to be and stadiums to see.

Thirteenth Stop - Krung Thep FC - Bangkok, Thailand - 4h 35m - $146
Our last stop in Asia is in Thailand to watch Krung Thep FC. Although we’ve been on this journey for a while, it’s hard to believe this is our first continent complete.

Fourteenth Stop - NorthShore United - Auckland, New Zealand - 13h 10m - $603
Our first overnighter and boy is it a doozy. 13 hours on a plane is no joke! But it’s just the start of our long haul jets. Before turning our journey around and heading back east we make a stop in New Zealand, the land where short people look for jewellery. NorthShore marks our seventh minor team.

Fifteenth Stop - CD Tenochtitlan - Mexico City, Mexico - 18h 5m - $953
We knew it was coming but it still hurts. Back-to-back flights over 10 hours long with little break in between is tough. But we’re in it to win it so we don’t complain. The last stop for on the North American continent is Mexico City. Full of culture, it’s a fun time but it’s time to head south.

Sixteenth Stop - CA Buenos Aires - Buenos Aires, Argentina - 9h 5m - $1,885
Turns out flying into Argentina is expensive no matter where you fly from. Our first of two stops in South America is almost as south as we go (NorthShore and F.C. Kaapstad look to be fairly similar on latitude).  Hard to believe the journey is almost complete as we mark off the second last major team. From here we head slightly north.

Seventeenth Stop - Uniao Sao Paulo - Sao Paulo, Brazil - 2h 40m - $205
A short flight is nice because we about to go LONG DISTANCE. But before that, we watch Uniano Sao Paulo who are the last major team and the last team in the Americas. When it’s time to go, we head to the last continent we have, Africa.

Eighteenth Stop - FC Kaapstad - Cape Town, South Africa - 13h 35m - $801
A trip across the south Atlantic Ocean puts us on the southern tip of Africa to watch FC Kaapstad. One of two teams in Africa and the third last team on our journey. This trip beats out NorthShore as the longest flight required to get to one SSL location from another. (I know NorthShore to Mexico City was longer but there are other closer SSL teams to Mexico City). Meaning F.C. Kaapstad is the most remote team the SSL currently has.

Nineteenth Stop - Cairo City - Cairo, Egypt - 15h 40m - $628
From the southern tip of Africa, we head to the northeastern part, Egypt. A long flight to brings as back to the southern edge of the continent we started in. Although we didn’t see much of Africa, we certainly saw both ends of it! From here, it’s a short hop to our final destination.

Twentieth Stop - Athenai F.C. - Athens, Greece - 2h - $192
It’s a short flight over the Mediterranean Sea to complete our tour of the SSL. The last stop is Athens to watch Athenai F.C.! This marks the twentieth team in the twentieth country on the sixth continent. A true trip around the world to watch the 20 best sports teams compete in the best sports league!

But we can’t end in Athens. We have to make it back home. The final leg of our trip is a 2h 10m flight to Budapest for $100. Pennies compared to the rest of the trip!

Thanks for coming on this adventure with our superfan!

Total Time in a plane: 109h 30m
