Looking Towards the Future: Catalunya and Seoul
#1
INTRODUCTION TO THE TEAM

The Catalunya/Seoul organization despite having great peaks in earlier seasons, have been one of the worst performing clubs in recent memory. Catalunya has finished in a bottom 2 placement in every season since S15, and with them currently sitting in last on the day of their final match, that trend will continue for yet another season. Seoul had a few bottom 2 placements as well within that stretch (S15-17) but has managed to cement themselves as a mid-table/top-table contender type squad since S18.

It would be easy to look at the organization and brush them off as doomed to dwell at the bottom of the table forever, but upon deeper inspection, Catalunya and Seoul seem to finally have the framework of a great team in the future. Key words being "in the future". On Catalunya's current roster, the only player older than S18 is Ljubica Kamenova, a S13 player and a long-time staple of the club. Seoul has only 2 players older than S19, being S15 Red Panda and S18 Alex Stain, two of the team's most reliable players. The entire organization is filled with young talent who are just getting their start in the SSL, and they have many seasons of hard work between now and their peak. The core of the organization lies within S18-S21, with a few more players to be added to it in the upcoming draft. The earliest of the core won't reach their peaks until S25, after which the S18's will begin to regress. I would say we will see the team's peak in seasons 25, 26, and 27, as their major core pieces become stars in the league.

At least 3 seasons is awhile to wait for their best shot at a title, so what does the organization have to look forward to? Looking at the roster, the team is well covered in future gems at most positions, players who can hopefully contribute to one of the best starting 11s. Let's take a look at some of the players who project to lead the charge for the organization.

MANAGER PLAYERS AND POSITIONAL NEEDS

First, we'll start with the manager players. These 3 players are the most solid bets to be staples of a future contender simply due to them being stapled to the team. Managers are the most likely to max earn as they are given a PT pass, making the 12 capped TPE free every week. The first manager player is Aenir's S22 Beelze Bot, currently in the Academy and will be joining Seoul next season. Beelze Bot will be one of the youngest players of the core but could come into play for the main squad due to positional need. Bot can play CD, CDM, and CM, three of the team's shakier areas at the moment. Bot could provide a stable presence down the middle to compliment the other players who are a bit older and will be more developed. Bot is a well-rounded player with some elite physical traits for his age and could hone his skillset in many different directions going forward.

Next is omni's S18 Joga Bonito, a creative attacking player who is now one of the longest serving players on Catalunya's roster after being thrust into the major leagues immediately after being drafted. Bonito has contributed 11 goals and 18 assists in his 4-season career so far. Decent numbers but plenty of room for growth. Bonito can play RAM, LAM, and ST, and is maxed out on his weak foot, making him an easy player to fit into an attacking scheme. Bonito's elite speed, acceleration, and agility paired with his impactful creativity make him a dangerous player in the final third. Bonito projects to be one of Catalunya's best options on attack going forward and will be one of the first of the core to make his peak.

The last manager player is my own, S19 Aart de Trella, a physical center back. ADT was thrust into the majors in his first season, much like Bonito. Catalunya has been in dire need for center backs, and de Trella quickly became the team's best option in the midst of his first season. de Trella has had an up-and-down career so far, shining bright in certain moments, yet blundering and conceding in others. Catalunya's defense has been one of the worst in the league over the past few seasons, and de Trella has been a big part of those struggles. Fortunately, the player growth has been excellent and there is potential there for ADT to be one of the best center backs in the league. de Trella can also play CDM or ST, using his aerial abilities as a target forward.

With these 3 players summarized, I would like to introduce what I believe to be the ideal positional coverage for a team to have on the roster. To best maximize tactical creativity within the current league tactical meta, a roster needs at least 3 and at most 4 attacking players which cover all of ST, LAM, CAM, and RAM Most attacking formations will use a RAM and LAM, and usually 1 or 2 strikers. 3 striker or CAM tactics are used at times, which is why it is useful to have 4 players that can cover attacking roles (CAM can usually also be covered by midfielders, which we will get to later). When creating tactics for the SSL, I generally find myself gravitating towards LAM + RAM + ST or LAM + RAM + STx2. I find CAMs to be difficult to use unless the player is truly one of the most elite players in the league. Having the flexibility to change from a 3-attacker to a 4-attacker system is valuable during the season.

Moving onto the midfield and defense, we are going to ignore the wide midfield positions entirely. LM and RM are seldom used and LAMs and RAMs can play those roles just fine even without the positional experience. Unfortunately, LM and RM are a waste of positional xp, and are better spent in LAM, LWB, or LB if a user wants to be a wide left player. The only positions you need to focus on in the midfield are central; CM and CDM being the main two. Ideally you want your midfield players to have either CAM/CM/CDM or CM/CDM/CD as their positions, allowing them to shift forward or backward given the formation. You want the flexibility to be able to play with 2 or 3 players within the central midfield. This has a very close relation with how you need to optimize your center backs. A roster needs to have at least 3 players that can play center back, giving the flexibility to play a variety of defensive systems instead of only 4 at the back. Some of the best tactics in the SSL utilize 3 center backs, and I'd want any team I'm managing to have that option. All this information tells us that we want 5 players between our center backs and center mids. You can divvy this up however you like, but it is easy to have 2 players that focus more on building as a midfielder, 2 that focus more as a back, and one hybrid who builds more specialized towards CDM. This way, you can shift that 5th player forward or backward in the formation if need be. Lastly, a team needs 1 player for wide defense on each side. These players need to have fullback AND wingback position xp. The 3rd is more flexible, but good options are winger on the appropriate side, CDM, or CD.

An ideal roster can shift from a 5-2-3, to a 4-2-3-1, to a 3-5-2, to a 4-2-4, to any common and viable formation without much stress. Being locked into few tactical styles and formations can hinder a team's success. Having the right positional coverage is half the battle in building a roster that can compete. Bot, Bonito, and de Trella offer Catalunya 2 of the 5 needed central players (Bot and de Trella) and one of the 3/4 (depending on formation) attacking players (Bonito). Next we will take a look at some players that can complement this trio to try and project what Catalunya's roster will look like at it's peak.

ATTACKERS

Catalunya has many options on attack, in fact, they might have too many this season. It is expected for the organization to lose one if not more of these attackers in the looming expansion. S18 Kel Varnson, S19 Kim Hueng-Min, S15 Red Panda, and S19 Carolien Miedema were all left unprotected, and are at risk of being selected in the expansion draft. As for the attackers that were protected, we have S18 Joga Bonito, S18 Bernardo Fry, S19 Tre Qartista, and S20 Daihbi Barr. If you are noticing a pattern, very good. That's 4 attackers protected out of 11 slots, giving us our ideal coverage. Miedema, Varnson, and Hueng-Min have been great players for Catalunya and Seoul, and have bright futures ahead of them. Panda is probably best suited as a career minor league player, but the other 3 could eaily contribute to the team's future success given they continue developing, however we cannot guarantee that they will remain with the team going forward. There are a very limited number of spots, and tough decisions have to be made. As a result, Bonito, Qartista, Fry, and Barr have been identified as the 4 most likely to be a key contributor in 3 or 4 seasons.

User ulaire's Qartista shockingly fell all the way to round 3 in the S19 draft, to Catalunya's great benefit. With ulaire's history in the league and reliable activity both tpe and discord-wise, I thought he would have been a strong contender to be a 1st round selection. That 3rd round pick has proved to be more than worth it as Qartista has become one of Catalunya's most promising attacking players. Developing well as a speedster with a nose for the back of the net, Qartista has emerged as the team's best option to lead the attack at Striker. Qartista can also play CAM or CM, giving him an interesting spread of positions, but ST is definitely the best fit for his player type.

User CuriousShadow's Fry has been one of Catalunya's more underrated players throughout his tenure, developing into easily the organization's best pure playmaker. Quietly plugging along, Fry has been a consistent earner who has filled a role as the team's primary LAM. A 3rd round selection by Catalunya in the S18 Draft, Fry has managed to prove himself to be another example that great value can be found outside of the top 2 rounds of the draft. Fry can also play LWB and LM (sad), but his 20 passing and otherwise lack of a defensive focus cement him as a great option on attack.

User JeffreyDaniels' Daihbi Barr is the youngest of the group and has shown great promise while developing in Seoul for the last 2 seasons. Barr was the organization's first round selection in the S20 Draft and has continued to prove why he was so highly touted coming into the draft. Still one of the top earners of his class, Barr has been developing into a dynamic 2-way threat playing RAM for Seoul. A very intelligent and physically gifted player, Barr can operate as a triggerman, or as the orchestrator in an attack. Barr has been a great addition to the locker room as weel and projects to be a key piece of the team.

MIDFIELDERS

Midfield is probably the area of the team that is the most shallow. The only true midfielder protected going forward is piza's S18 Nikolai Ahmed. Ahmed's development started slowly, but we have seen him grow leaps and bounds over the last 2 seasons and he as cemented himself as the team's best option in the center midfield going forward. Ahmed is a technically and mentally gifted player and has been working hard to improve his physicality in recent months. With CAM/CM/CDM availability, Ahmed stands out as the team's main central pivot. Ahmed was a 5th(!!!!) round pick and has far surpassed the normal return on investment one would get out of a 5th rounder.

The organization has some other central midfielders who are unfortunately left unprotected S18 Ben Nelson, S19 Day Walker, S20 Bread Lasso, and S21 Anthony Simmons are all available for selection by the expansion team, and I would be shocked if one if not two of these players are chosen. I project the team to have Bot, Ahmed, and Simmons after the draft for sure, but the other 3 have a good chance of being selected, all of which will be a big loss. Catalunya will have to look to fill those roles in the upcoming offseason. Many of the team's defenders are able to play CDM, but they are not true midfield pivots build or positional xp-wise.

DEFENDERS AND GOALTENDING

Defenders, especially Center Backs, are often the hardest to find. Getting users that are interested in playing a role where not much offense is possible and most highlights they see will be them making mistakes is no small feat. Thankfully, Catalunya has a myriad of defenders who project to be long-term pieces. Protected are S18 Jordan Bamford, S19 Aart de Trella, S20 Pablo Kawasaki, S20 Andres De Giron, and S21 Carolina Salazar.

User Bamford's Jordan Bamford has been another underrated yet vital piece to the organization. With the departure of Ilya Prusikin, Catalunya needed another player to fill in at the right defender spot, and Bamford has done an admirable job. Well-rounded, with about an equal focus on offense and defense, Bamford is a reliable presence that can contribute to the attack while not leaving us completely open to the counter. Bamford can also play LD and RM (sad). Bamford was a 4th round pick, making me repeat myself by saying something else about finding value later in the draft. It is truly remarkable how much of this core comes from late in the draft.

User Voodooman's Pablo Kawasaki on the other hand, is an example of a higher draft pick paying off. Well, Catalunya did not draft Kawasaki, he was sniped in the draft. Kawasaki was one of the team's top targets going into the S20 Draft, so the team went out and traded for Kawasaki almost immediately after he was selected. Kawasaki projects to be the teams other main CB next to de Trella, and the 2 should be a dynamic duo for many seasons to some. Kawasaki has proved himself one of the best earners in his class and is building an extremely athletic and strong defensive-minded player.

User aegis' Andres De Giron is basically an identical story to Kawasaki. De Giron was selected with a high draft pick by another team, and Catalunya went out and traded for him as De Giron was identified as a player they could not miss out on. De Giron has been lethal playing as a RWB in Seoul, showcasing great vision, athleticism, and dribbling. Earning extremely well and one of our most active locker room members, De Giron projects to be a staple for the team.

Last is user Renomitsu's Carolina Salazar, a LWB who has had a solid rookie season for Seoul. Salazar is an athletically gifted player with the ability to get up in the play and deliver the killer ball needed to score a goal, while occasionally potting some home herself. The team's 1st round selection in the S21 Draft, the team invested high capital in this player and thus protected them as they are projected to be the heir to Ljubica Kamenova's throne. A reliable and excellent user, Renomitsu and Salazar fit great into our core and will be an important player.

In net, the organization has two great options: S18 Bartholomew Twinkletoes and S20 James Asprey. Twinkletoes was protected over Asprey, being further along in his development. Both of these players could easily be franchise goaltenders for a major's team in the future. The organization is blessed to have both of them, and it would be unsurprising to see a user and player of Asprey's quality get selected in the expansion draft.

FUTURE LINEUP

As we have discussed in this article, Catalunya has a long way to go, but the semblance of a future roster is there. Of course, nothing is guaranteed, players may surpass one another, trades may happen, users might go inactive... sim leagues can offer some wild scenarios that are hard to project. However, I am going to do my best to project the peak Catalunya lineup based on the pieces currently in place:

Attackers: S18 Bonito, S18 Fry, S19 Qartista, S20 Barr
Midfielders: S18 Ahmed, S22 Bot
Defenders: S18 Bamford, S19 de Trella, S20 Kawasaki, S20 De Giron, S21 Salazar
Goalie: S18 Twinkletoes

IN CONCLUSION

This is the longest article I have written in quite some time, so I hope it is not such a chore to get through. I tried my best to offer some insights on team building as a manager in the SSL. Of course, I have to keep some things close to my chest, but I hope this article was interesting to anyone looking for a deeper look into the organization and into roster and team management.

Catalunya and Seoul have had some dark days, but there seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel. If everything continues on its current trajectory, the organization should be able to contend for titles in 3-4 seasons. Let's hope for the best! VIVA CATALUNYA AND GO SEOUL MYTHIC!!
