CD Tenochtitlan made the bold decision to use the draft to completely overhaul their defense while completely ignoring their attack. It’s a bold strategy, but not necessarily one I fault them for. Looking at the strength of the organization’s ranks right now, there are two positions clearly lagging behind the rest, and that is the two positions that they chose to address in this draft. Center back and Goalkeeper.
CDT had two first round picks and a second this year. They gave up their third round pick in order to protect a few additional active members of the team that had to be exposed in the expansion draft. With the first of their two first rounders, Tenochtitlan took one of the two elite Goalkeeper prospects in the draft, Gianluigi Buffoon. Buffoon was one of the best prospects in the draft, and his draft position definitely reinforced that fact as he was off the board in the first half of the first round. From both an on and off field perspective, it appears that Buffoon was the correct pick for Tenochtitlan as they got a top notch user who will hopefully be THE guy between the sticks for them for the next 10+ seasons. Possibly even a future captain.
With the second first round pick, CDT was able to land Larv Itar. Larv Itar was a goalkeeper in the academy, but is expected to enter the professional ranks as a center back and will be leading the Krung Thep backline immediately as they develop into one of the stronger teams in the minor leagues. It is very likely that we see players in Krung Thep’s attack and midfield make the jump into CDT’s first team this season, and the defensive picks will likely be ready for the bigs once the attack is well enough established to start grabbing more consistent points at that level. Larv Itar has the potential to be a huge part of that future CDT team, and so does…
CDT’s second round pick, JG Wentworth. Rumor has it he told CDT that he needs cash now. He will link up with Larv Itar as part of the center defense duo that will lead Krung Thep forward in future seasons. Wentworth is not the most physically gifted defender, which may make things tough when taking on the speed and power of the SSL’s attacking players, however, Wentworth more than makes up for his physical shortcomings with the ability to play a part in the attacking build up as a technically skilled and mentally gifted player. If Larv Itar could be the physically dominant of the two center backs, a back 4 of McGary at LB, Wentworth at LCB, Itar at RCB, and Sandro at RB could complement one another extremely well and cover one another’s weaknesses. A strong balance of attacking play vs defensive capabilities as well as a nice balance of physical play vs finesse. Who says a team needs to focus on just one.
I think CDT knocked it out of the park with their draft class. Three really high level prospects with the spots available to grow into impact players in Mexico City in the future. Before the draft, I had zeroed in on Center Back as my major position of need and GK as the secondary need. Apparently the OMs were on the same exact page as me. From a selfish perspective, I’m extremely excited to be playing next to a center back pair that is improving alongside me week in and week out. I’m rooting for all three of them to set the league alight in their debut seasons.
